How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?

When I got home last night, I smelled antifreeze, but it was dark and I didn't see a leak and my coolant light came on briefly and went off. This morning I drove the car to a garage and they filled it up with antifreeze, then I drove to work about 25 miles away, I went out about 30 minutes later and the antifreeze was empty, and it appeared to be leaking from the bottom, I don't know if it's a hose or the water pump. The temperature gage remained on the halfway mark and the heat blowing from the heater was hot, but I did notice a little steam coming out from under the hood when I stopped at traffic lights on my way to work. I change the oil every 3,000 or 4,000 miles, keep the filters changed, tuneups, etc. So I really don't know know what the problem is, I am not mechanically inclined!!! I am a woman and mechanics tend to take advantage of that fact!! I would greatly appreciate any advice!!!How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
When a pump goes bad... it usually starts leaking. There is a small %26quot;seep%26quot; hole on the bottom of the pump... that is where it will leak if the internal seals fail. You will need to locate the leak in order to know what's going on.

the overheating of the coolant can be cause by few things, (in cost order)

the system is holding pressure, the radiator cap is bad or

there might be a leak in one of the hoses, (you can go to an auto parts store or oil lube place and they usually check the pressure for free

the thermostat can be stuck closed, which mean the coolant isn't being passed through the radiator.

or you water pump has gone bad, which will give almost the same symptoms as the thermostat get stuck.

sorry i can't be any more help, it is hard to diagnose without inspecting it myself. How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
over heating??How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
From what you describe it sounds like a radiator hose or cap is leaking. If the water pump was going out, it might have trouble getting coolant to your heater core, and it would blow cool air. usually water pumps will leak coolant out of a little hole underneath the water pump, behind the pulley, called the weep hole. These are just signs, the pump could be going out without showing these signs. A good step would be to borrow a coolant system pressure tester, and pressure test the system by draining the coolant, and hooking the tester up to the radiator cap and seeing if it holds pressure. Also, replace radiator cap (they're cheap, and should be done every so often). The rise in temp. could be from system losing pressure, lowering boiling temp of coolant andHow do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
based on your description I can't determine anything other than you have a leak.

If you let it overheat you can do serious damage to the engine. It can cause you to have to replace it, so watch the gage carefully.

Next, You will need to determine where the leak is. That will likely require looking under the hood and even under the car. You can ask a boyfriend or even take it to the oil change place and have the oil changed; while under the car have them look for leaks. They don't fix this stuff so they are not motivated to lie about the problem,How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
Take it to: Dayo's Garage 15 Fillmore Ave. Tonawanda, NY 14150. I can tell you where it leaks without taking advantage of your womanlyness. How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
you have a bad leak.

You probably have an aluminum engine,,,which is the worst kind of metal for an overheat problem,,,it will easily ruin the entire engine.

You need a mechanic pronto. How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
It sounds like a leaky hose or radiator. If your waterpump quit you would notice a sharp increase in your engine temp as it would not be getting any cooling water. If you have a machanic you can trust I would take it to them and have them check for leaks. How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
You initially need to get the cooling system pressure tested. It is a simple test to pressurise system to force it to leak. That may uncover an expensive, or not too expensive problem, but the test is not expensive. How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
A bad water-pump either makes noise inside the output shaft or it leaks antifreeze through a designed %26quot;weep hole%26quot; underneath the water pump housing out-put shaft. The good thing about antifreeze is it does not dry out when you turn the motor off. I guaranty you will find the leak if you follow the wet tracks. Check the core of your radiator and where the core is crimped to the plastic end tanks.

It helps a ton if you can get jack stands under the frame rails and use a trouble light with the radiator and coolant recovery bottle @ mid line with the motor running. How do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
the water pump runs off of the belts, find the belts and look at the lowest pulley if there is water coming out from below there it's probably the water pumpHow do you know when a water pump goes out on your vehicle?
Sounds like a hose, water pump would mean overheated engine, which unless you stopped the car would get worse. Often at the same time the heater might blow cold air because the coolant is not circulating. Changing oil has nothing to do with the cooling system, the hoses need to be inspected and cooling system serviced every 2 years.
