Should I pay this much for my transmission or go somewhere else?

Hi, My name is Aaron. I have a 1994 Buick Regal with just about 73,000 miles on it. I bought it from an older couple for $3,200. I have owned it for about a year now and hasn't had any major problems.

Last 2 months ago, I just put a brand new cooling system, water pump, oil change, and windshield wiper blades for about $350. I go to a shop called %26quot;Jiffy Oil%26quot; which they know my car backwards and forwards and also give me discounts (They know my mom).

Anyways, my car started making noise so I took it to them. They knew it was my transmission, but have no skills into repairing it. They told me to go down to the transmission place next to Dairy Queen and tell them Jiffy Oil sent you and it was Mark. I said Ok and took my car down there.

The guy there at the transmissions place got in my car listened to the noise and opened the hood. He showed me exactly what the problem was. It had chunks of metal everywhere..I had no idea how it happened. He said it would run me about $1,100 to repair it as if it were brand new and would give me 12 months free repair with insurance as well. I told him I'd think about it and take my car some other places first. I went to three other places I knew. The first one said $1,600 and would be $200 extra for insurance for only 6 months. The second one said $6,800. They told me it was totally damaged, never seen anything like it before. And the third one said $9,200..they said pretty much the same thing as the second. Both did not include insurance. My dad said that is outrageous for such prices and doesn't know what to do either. My cousin, which is a Diesel/Automotive Machanic, said that the first one was a good deal and I should go with it, because my car would only sell for $500 if I wanted to sell it. Please help! Thanks everyone.Should I pay this much for my transmission or go somewhere else?
The $1100 is definitely a good deal.Should I pay this much for my transmission or go somewhere else?
ac_johns71014, I had similar problems last week and was glad I got my repairs covered under my extended warranty. They are less expensive if you don't buy them from the manufacturer. http://www.autoadviceonline.com/Warranty-Quote.htmlShould I pay this much for my transmission or go somewhere else?
$1,000 is,nt bad for all that work. i believe i would go with that. the reason the chunks were there was they never kept the fluid and filter changed.Should I pay this much for my transmission or go somewhere else?
I would go with $1100. Why not just get a rebuilt one and exchange it. Look into that instead of going for repairs.Should I pay this much for my transmission or go somewhere else?
$1,100 is definitely a good price. Especially with the economy the way it is you're lucky to find anyone that will fix the car for under $2000. It depends on how much you love your car though if you feel you'd rather sell it then do it.

  • How do i replace 1990 chevrolet ck1500 4.3 oil adapter gasket?

i replaced timing chain on the truck, and to get the timing cover back on i had to drop the oil pan. since i had the oil pan off i replaced the oil pump, normal volume not the high volume. i've got everything back together and oil appears to be leaking from the oil filter adapter, where it bolts to block. i had to remove the adapter to change the oil pan and i could not locate a gasket at the parts store, and since i read online it doesnt need a gasket i just cleaned it as best i could and bolted it back up. it appears to have some kind of o ring or something inside it. i was told that the truck had a leak at the rear main seal, but when i took off the flywheel cover it appeared fairly clean inside. my question is this: how do i properly reinstall the oil filter adapter so it won't leak (btw there is NO oil cooler), and could the oil filter adapter have been the problem instead of the rear main? thanks for any helpHow do i replace 1990 chevrolet ck1500 4.3 oil adapter gasket?
The oil filter adapter may well have an O ring and a gasket, which have a great tendancy to leak when at higher milage. Both should be changed.

I want to ask about my oil filter?

ok i change my oil today and the oil was dark black but one thing was the oil filter was not dirty i mean i replace my oil every 3,000 miles and i all ways take the oil filter out and change it but its not dirty the oil filter this is the 3rd time that the oil filter is clean and i know the oil have to go in the oil filter to clean the oil when the engine runs but its clean no dark old oil in the filter is there something wrong with my oil pump how i know if its not working right and its a fram oil filterI want to ask about my oil filter?
If your oil pump is not working your car would not run thirty miles, let alone three thousand miles. Yourloil filter looks good because you are changing it every three thousand miles like you are supposed to. Don't worry about it. it might seem clean if you look at it on the outside, but inside the filter is where you would see the stuff the filter is filtering. This has happened to me too.I want to ask about my oil filter?
I don't know what kind of car you have, but I would look at the oil filter bypass valve in the oil filter neck. It may be stuck open and allowing oil to bypass the filter.I want to ask about my oil filter?
i agree you have a flow issue, the bypass valve is stuck open not allowing oil onto the oil filter once it is filled up. the problem is not necessarily the pump or the filter. depending on what type of car you are driving, the location of this bypass valve can be very easy to get to.

How does crude oil price affect the gas price at the pump?

When we see this price go down, how soon until we can expect to see the price at the pump go down? Also, these price reports usually include %26quot;for (month) delivery%26quot;. Does that mean delivery to consumers, or delivery to the refineries? How does this delivery month affect prices at the pump?

I understand that outside influences can change the price at the pump (refinery capacity, strikes, tax changes, etc). But, if we strip these variables away, how much does the price of crude oil (per barrel) affect the price at the pump? How does crude oil price affect the gas price at the pump?
Delivery is to the buyer of the barrel of crude which means a refiner. It takes about a month to refine the oil that is delivered and the stations don't usually drop prices as fast as they raise them. So assuming that you are looking at July delivery, the refiners will be all set in August and that refined gasoline will be delivered to stations late August in the best case scenario.

The price at the pump is reflected in marginal prices. Since the U.S. consumes more oil than is produced here the real prices are set at the margin (what we buy on the open market). In order to keep the markets stable and liquid the entire stock is priced at the market. The calculations take a little bit but a barrel of oil is 42 gallons and that is refined into various products 19.2 gallons of which is generally gasoline . That should help you see the beginning of the pricing. I have done the full math with estimations on actual profit recieved by everyone. It's a bit long but if you are interested contact me and let me know so I can direct you to it.How does crude oil price affect the gas price at the pump?
when the price of crude oil increases you expect it to go up most likely a month after.

taxes imposed on petroleum products are already fixed and wont really change unless approve by the gov't

what can negate the effect of oil price increase is the appreciation of your currencyHow does crude oil price affect the gas price at the pump?
it gives the Oil Companies the excuse to commit armed robbery with a gas pump rather than a gun.How does crude oil price affect the gas price at the pump?
you really aren't likely to see any real difference based on the monthly delivery price. This is due to expectations and futures have likely already taken into account this price. So a real change is only when the actual is different from the expected. gas refineries purchase contracts in advance so that is the price or cost they see in the future. How does crude oil price affect the gas price at the pump?
i dont think there is any rhyme or reason to any of this, basicallly. i mean, yea, some of those things you listed DO affect the price, but my dad said its just to get your money...

have you ever noticed the prices go up during holidays like christmas and easter, wen EVERYONE is going to drive out of town to see family?!

i know this has nothing to do with your Q, but your Q triggered my memory of this dream i had last nite...thanks!!!

well i dremt that the price was up to $6 and $7, all in one day! it wuz terrible, cuz you can barely fill up your car without taking out your life savings...it was weird...but if you think this is bad at $3.50, just think of how almost $7 wuld effect our economy!!!

but if we run out of resources, thats wat we will be doing to ourselves because most car companies will not make more fuel-efficient cars, bc they would 'lose money' from all the effieciency...thats just stupid, huh? like wats it going to take before they finally realize that they have to change?!

anyways, thanks for listening to me...

;)How does crude oil price affect the gas price at the pump?
As I think many people have pointed out, crude oil is only one portion of the value chain. It takes about a month to refine and during that time, refining capacity drives the price at the pump much more than movements in WTI crude.

Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?

1998 Toyota V6 with 150,000 miles had the oil light come on. No abnormal engine noises were heard while driving to repair facility. (or ever for that matter) Tests by mechanic concluded that the pump is failing at high temperatures. In the process of taking things apart, the mechanic found %26quot;aluminum and brass particles in the oil pan%26quot;.

Since the pan has never been removed before, is there a quantity of particles that would be expected?

Where would the brass particles come from?

    Recommendations?

Background: Car has been reasonably well maintained with routine oil changes at a Toytoa dealership.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
brass is bad can only come from bearings youre time with this engine is limited best bet is to have new bearings rolled in they can do this with oil pan off it mite give you a few more years good luckMetal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
metal particles in the oil pan are a big problem.if they move around your bottom end they will chew on everything. the right amount is nearly zero. now if its not too late you can try a magnetic oil drain plug to keep the stuff from circulating, and obviously make sure the oil pump is working.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
Send in an oil sample from your engine and the oil analysis results will tell you what's been wearing abnormally, if anything, in your engine. Switching to a full synthetic oil like Mobil One will reduce the engine wear and extend the life of the engine:

http://www.mobiloil.comMetal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
A handfull of small flakes are usually on my magnetic drain plug when I change the oil. The brass is from bearings, which is a bad sign. You have done major damage to your engine. If it still runs then drive keep driving it, but don't ever drive with the oil light on, EVER.Metal particles in the oil pan? How much is too much?
oil pump is a positive displacement gear pump each gear spins on an axis the brass is from the bushings ...metal particles are not normal ...indication of metal to metal wear

my recommendation would be to flush the oil system..use cheap oil run it about a half hour and drain....refill with oil of choice I am assuming that they changed the pump and reinstalled the pan...right?...ask the shop if they use a lab for oil analysis if so ..your next 3 or 4 oil changes a sample should be sent to the lab results will tell you if you have anything else going on in there

How many hours can you use a pressure washer before you need to change the oil?

I Have a 4 year old Troy-Bilt 4.5HP 2200 Psi Pressure Washer. ive recently bored out the Inflow/outflow of the pump increasing the water flow, put a high performance spark plug and put bigger jets on the carburetor. and i began using 93 octane Shell V-power Nitrogen enriched fuel. My pressure washer cleans better then my friends 2800 Psi washer. but my question is how many hours can i go until i need to change my oil, im curious because of my recent modifications im sure the motor is harder on oil.How many hours can you use a pressure washer before you need to change the oil?
Oil does not lose its properties, just gets dirty. That is main reason for filter on a car. Hope this helps.

  • What are the benefits of switching from your standard oil pump to a high performance one.?

Soon I will be changing my clutch kit on my 75 chev. nova. A good time to make this change, however I would like to know if it would be worth the expense. How would my car benefit from such a change. If so, can you recommend a good one for a 75 chev. nova. 250 eng. 4.1. Thanks very much. What are the benefits of switching from your standard oil pump to a high performance one.?
Generally that would be good if you had a high performance engine pushing quite a bit of HP. Since your Nova only has the 6cyl (im not putting it down or anything) it probably wouldnt really be worth the added expense. What are the benefits of switching from your standard oil pump to a high performance one.?
I'm not sure what you are trying to do. Are you trying to soup up your car, a four banger? If I'm not mistaken you have a mechanical oil pump and a mechanical fuel pump. I can't see any benefit in replacing the oil pump unless something is wrong with the present one. What are the benefits of switching from your standard oil pump to a high performance one.?
You will gain 50 hp. and 13mpg. with this change. double that if you use slick 50

How do I increase the life of my car?

I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu LS with 134,300 miles on it.

I recently had a %26quot;tune-up%26quot; which involved changing out the plugs and wires. Does this increase the life of the car? What else can I do to increase the life of my car (besides belt changes, fluid flushes, oil changes, fuel filter and oil filter changes, and other routine maintenance)? I want this car to last until 200,000 or even beyond. The only problems I've had with it have been relatively minor (fuel pump needed changed and turn signals needed to be replaced which was on a recall and I had both done for free; something with the radiator pump or something the other needed to be replaced, which was just a $30 job; and I think that's all that's really gone wrong.)How do I increase the life of my car?
In order to make your car last a long time, you need to make sure you get regular oil changes (including the oil filter). Another thing that helps is keeping it clean. I suggest washing your car at least once every two or three weeks. About every 3 washes, make sure you wax it. Paste wax is the easiest to work with in this application. Make sure you go by the book and have regular mantinence at the scheduled intervals. I would also make sure te tires have the proper amount of pressure in them to keep those last as long as they can. Depending on where you live during the colder winter months, make sure you let your car warm up for at least 5 minutes!! It is very hard on an ice cold engine to run in winter conditions! Other than that, make sure you know how your car runs. Also %26quot;listen%26quot; to your car. That way if something goes wrong, you can hear or feel it on the wheel. How do I increase the life of my car?
The car will last as long as you keep doing the maintenance. At somepoint the cost of the maintenance isn't justified. Why put $1500 in repairs towards a car that isn't worth $1500?

You should know what the value of the car is, then decide if fixing it is a good use of your money.

Most cars get to a point where the high $ repairs start coming in constantly, at that point your more or less making a car payment anyway...

I have 1999 Nissan Maxima with 155K miles on it. It's getting to that point now. Just invested $2K in service + brakes, now it needs fuel injectors for another $1K. The trade-in value is just over $3K, when do I say uncle? How do I increase the life of my car?
depending on the make of the auto some cars will surpass 200,000 miles quite easily. Not knowing the make or model of your car I would say your on the right track all ready with your regular ,routine maintenance program.Changing motor oil is one of the most important and vital things you can do. However you can make a huge difference in the vehicles life expediency,by the way you drive it.I mean if you let it warm up in the morning or at the beginning of your commute, this will make your engine happy. Also after your commute let your engine idle for a few minutes, before shutting it off. This will let the hot engine cool and reduce wear and tear on moving parts and sealing components Heavy or hard acceleration is kind of rough on an engine as well as the transmission. This too should be avoided,as well as hard deceleration or coming to a sudden stop from a high speed. Have you ever heard the phrase yep this vehicle is a real cream puff, all highway miles on her, perhaps during a sale of a vehicle? There is a big difference in highway miles vs stop and go city traffic miles on a vehicle. I would stay away from any oil additives like prolong engine treatment or slick 50 to name a couple. These oil additives are not at all necessary if you take care and use common sense, which you seem to already have.I think your on the right track alright and should be fine.Good Luck Drive Safe

Low oil pressure, loud ticking randomly. Suddenly oil pressure gauge needle jumping?

    any input is appreciated.

    i have a 99 camaro v6 automatic with 117K

last oil change was 2,000 miles ago

about 8 months ago i had the oil pressure sending unit replaced

i just had my car in the shop on Tuesday and they did the standard check and checked the pressure with their professional machine and it read fine

last night i was driving and everything was fine.. my %26quot;dummy%26quot; pressure gauge read normal but this morning (on cold start) it had a very loud tick from the lifters (which happens occasionally on cold starts) and no oil pressure... it was all the way at the bottom almost as if the gauge didnt work (like it did when the gauge went out months ago and i replaced it) it was running fine, felt normal. there was no knock or any strange noise at all (besides the tick of the lifters)

so i stopped, checked the oil level and it was fine and full.

then i decided to wait a couple hours and start it and and WaaaLaaa!!! the gauge read its normal pressure so i thought maybe it wasnt reading it correctly or something.

so i felt like it was safe to drive home... so i drove it and it was fine, gauge read normal, felt great and everything then i got off the freeway and i noticed a few minutes later when i stopped at a red light the gauge jumped around too slightly low, then normal, then suddenly down to zero. so i put it in Neutral and gave it a quick rev....and it put it back up to normal. (engine sounded fine, ran great, no knock and no ticking this time) then as i continued driving it continued to jump around... when i was accelerating it was normal but as i stopped and was idling it dropped back down.

    please help

could it be my sending unit?

if they read the pressure using their gauge at the shop 2 days ago and it was perfect, could it really be low now?

why would it not be okay then a couple hours later its fine..?

i do have some sludge that i need to get flushed out with this upcoming oil change.. could that be part of my problem???

also, if its possible that it could be my oil pump, how difficult is that to replace? what is the average cost that a shop would charge?

thank you!!!! i know it was very detailed but as i found with doing the Q %26amp; A sites you have to be as detailed as possible.

Thanks!!!!!!Low oil pressure, loud ticking randomly. Suddenly oil pressure gauge needle jumping?
Could be anything from fuses, to a bad ticker. Such as if a pistons acts up from time to time when you take it to the mechanic it might act fine but still be going out. I think it is the start of a bigger problerm. Try the oil pump.Low oil pressure, loud ticking randomly. Suddenly oil pressure gauge needle jumping?
i didnt read all that stuff but low oil, loud ticking equals engine bad!

something obviously broke or is breaking cause of no oil, so all that friction of all the metals in the engine... bad....Low oil pressure, loud ticking randomly. Suddenly oil pressure gauge needle jumping?
I guarantee you the loud ticking is from the valve lifters not getting any oil/enough oil. This could easily kill your engine very soon, if the problem is not fixed. Get your oil pump checked. Get an engine flush because on cars with timing chains you can get erosion buildup from the plastic internal tensioners (although i am not sure if your car has it)Low oil pressure, loud ticking randomly. Suddenly oil pressure gauge needle jumping?
Your lifters could be bleeding down overnite (or sooner) which they should not do. I am concerned about the low oil pressure at times which might indicate that the bearings or oil pump could be worn out but most likely the bearings. Don't worry yourself about the sending unit or gauge being bad that is not your problem. You might have a shop put in a new oil pump but since you have been having problems with the low oil pressure I would lean towards am engine overhaul. Sorry I cannot help you on the cost as that varies from place to place. Thanks for all the detailed info. It really helps!

    Good Luck!

Please help....My car oil light was blinking on and off but is off now...What is problem?

I started up my car and the oil light started blinking on and off. I stopped at a gas station, added like 3 quarts of oil and the light went then went off. I think I might have a small leak....I took my car back to the oil change place and they said immediately that it is the oil sending unit. How do I know it is not the oil pump? How long can I drive with a bad sending unit? How long can I drive with a bad oil pump? As long as I keep oil with me, will the car keep running? Can I replace either of these parts in my driveway myself? I am wondering how can you tell the difference between a bad sending unit and a bad oil pump? I was able to drive home and have been driving my car ok for about 60 miles now. The light is off now I am guessing because I have enough oil in the engine. Thank you. Please help....My car oil light was blinking on and off but is off now...What is problem?
You are probably right. If the oil level is low the oil may slosh away from the pickup when you stop (or accelerate, depending on the position of the pickup in your car) This will cause the light to flicker as the air passes through the system where the oil should be. First thing: if your oil was three quarts low you need to be checking it more frequently! Second thing: If it using oil (or leaking) It will depend on what is leaking as to the cost to repair it...A rear seal - big bucks! A valve cover gasket - maybe not much, but you will have to get an estimate as to the repair cost to decide if it will be cheaper to fix or buy oil! If it's burning oil, you probabIy would not have passed the smog test required in most states. You drove 60 miles the oil pump is probably good. If the light only came on when the engine was low on oil, the sending unit is probably good. Watch the oil level by checking it frequently and add oil when it shows a quart low...BTW don't add too much oil. If you overfill the oil in hopes of making it farther between adding, you will probably damage the engine! Please help....My car oil light was blinking on and off but is off now...What is problem?
if you drive with a bad oil pump, your screwing yourself overPlease help....My car oil light was blinking on and off but is off now...What is problem?
Start by checking the oil level with the dipstick

If you have enough and the light doesn't come back than you were low

If you have enough and the light still comes back and it's a chevy gm or Pontiac or caddy than it's the opsu.

The car would be making noise and be having driveability problems if there was an oil pump problem.

But first make sure of how much oil is in there if you add to much it will cause damage. Please help....My car oil light was blinking on and off but is off now...What is problem?
Did you tell the oil change place that you added the three quarts of oil.

If not, they think and so would everyone else that it could be the sending unit.

The oil pump itself wouldn't trip your oil light, that is the sending unit that does that.

Changing the sending unit shouldn't be that hard, go ask your auto store where it would be on your car, then try to locate it and see if if you can get to it easily.

The oil pump, no there is usually too much junk in the way to drop the oil pan and remove the pump.

Watch your oil light and also use your oil dip stick and keep checking the fluid level.

You also don't mention if you have oil on the ground, this indicates a leak. But that isn't uncommon in older cars.

Good luckPlease help....My car oil light was blinking on and off but is off now...What is problem?
If the sender unit is telling the truth, then the problem is low oil pressure. That's the only thing that can turn that light on. The low oil pressure may have been caused by low oil level. The senders are trouble-prone, though.

Don't drive with a bad sender. That's silly. It costs about $8, and it just screws into the block in about 3 minutes.

With a bad oil pump, you can drive about 50 feet or so.

How do i get fuel efficiency back in my car (an '01 crv)?

I know when they get a little older they lose a little bit of efficiency but mine is not that old, and ive got about 93,000 miles on it and i get the oil changed when needed, pump up tires when needed, is there additives or something that could bring a little bit of the efficiency, im suppose to get about 22/25 but right now it seems like i am getting 16/18, anything i could do?How do i get fuel efficiency back in my car (an %26039;01 crv)?
I have run higher octane even if added by a bottle off shelf along with injector cleaner, the engine burns off carbons while running hotter, carbons are like black soot in a chimney, plugging gasoline passages %26amp; exhaust. Don't over do it. one add per tank 3x in a row then once every other tank. Try what dr %26amp; pro told you first, that's the best first attempt. How do i get fuel efficiency back in my car (an %26039;01 crv)?

You, my friend, need a tune up. Replacing the plugs, wires and fuel and air filters will bring your fuel efficiency back to like it was when it was new.

  • Oil Pump or Lifters??? Which one is it and approx how much will it cost to fix?

    1997 Grand Am, 3.1L, V6, approx 181,000 miles

Ok...I have had several people tell me several different things and I am not sure what to get fixed. I have a loud ticking noise when I start up the car and I have to let it warm up for about 10-15 mins in order for the ticking noise to be quieter and if I don't let it warm up and take off it wont get up to speed and feels like its pulling and once it warms up I can still here the ticking but its faint and as far as the performance its runs good once its warmed up.

I have been told that its the oil pump and if I change it then its best to change the timing belt with it. Along with that I was told that its rare that the oil pumps go bad and then I heard that on 3100, 3800, V6's, it is not rare and that they do go bad.

I have been told that it was the lifters as well.

I have no idea what the heck is going on and I don't want to get ripped off. Please help, any advice is good advice!

THANKS!!!Oil Pump or Lifters??? Which one is it and approx how much will it cost to fix?
Before you do anything else, put some engine flush in it and then change the oil.

If the trouble was the oil pump, the noise would stay the same or get worse when it warms up, and the oil light would at least be flickering.Oil Pump or Lifters??? Which one is it and approx how much will it cost to fix?
if your going to replace the lifters you might as well replace the camshaft.and while your at it replace the oil pump.Oil Pump or Lifters??? Which one is it and approx how much will it cost to fix?
i would have to say it,s the lifters not pumping up right away. the only way to stop that is change the lifters. that,s what happen when a person don,t keep their oil changed. i have a 1988 oldsmobile and they don,t make any noise. it has a 3800 engine.Oil Pump or Lifters??? Which one is it and approx how much will it cost to fix?
They could be right; but it's that the lifters are making noise, and since they are probably hydraulic lifters, they are making noise because they aren't getting enough oil. Lifters are mechanically rather simple, and if many of them are making noise it's more likely that they aren't getting oil than that they are collapsed. The next logical thing would be to think that it's the oil pump's fault, but it could just as easily be a blocked passage. An oil pump (positive displacement type) is just two dumb old gears fully submerged in oil; it has the easiest job in the engine. If the internal surfaces of the pump are scored, then oil will leak back past the gears and you will lose pressure. The loss of pressure is most noticeable in the valve train since it is the farthest from the pump (don't cite me on that). But like I said, it could just as easily be a blocked passage. An old mechanic's trick is to replace a quart of engine oil with ATF to kinda %26quot;purge%26quot; the passageways and clean them a little bit. But what you really ought to do is find the oil pressure sensor (your car has one whether it has an oil pressure gauge or not), unscrew it, and hook up a pressure gauge to that outlet port. Then check to see if the oil pressure is within spec. You don't wanna dig around in an engine replacing things on a whim.Oil Pump or Lifters??? Which one is it and approx how much will it cost to fix?
the lifters (also known as the tappets) are the rods that open up the valves to allow intake of air and exhaust the leftovers of the combustion process. it is rare (but not impossible) for these to be replaced. rather than replaced they are usually just adjusted. if your timing is off or your tappets are out of adjustment then your car cannot draw in as much air as it should or let out the waste as it was designed. both of these will inhibit your cars power. if the oil pump had gone out then the engine would usually overheat and seize. the engine would simply not run for very long. if i remember correctly the timing belt on a 1997 Grand Am was on the outside of the engine so you should be able to look and see if it has any cracks, breaks, or wear. if it is not broken, or breaking, don't fix it. as with all mechanics ask them to show you the part they say needs to be replaced. ask them why they think it needs to be replaced. never hesitate to ask questions. it is your car and you deserve to know what's going on. good luck :-)Oil Pump or Lifters??? Which one is it and approx how much will it cost to fix?
%26lt;---3.8L good engines (Series II) 108,000miles

It has a timing chain, not a belt. (no replacement needed)

It could be air in the lifters.

If someone changed the oil without prefilling the oil filter air will circulate though the engine and cause the lifters to collapse while in use.

It could also be low oil pressure not pumping the lifters up enough.

    Have the oil pressure tested.

Is there a gauge on the dash????

Is your engine oil level low?

When was the last time you had an oil change?

How long has it been doing this?

Before you spend a bunch of money on something you don't need,

have your oil changed to 10-W40 conventional oil.Oil Pump or Lifters??? Which one is it and approx how much will it cost to fix?
first check the oil pressure gauge it should be around 30's or 40's psi if a lil higher that's ok but if it's lower like just over 0 of half in the red then it's a worn out oil pump an will need to be replaced it's possible that the oil pump could be worn an it's not pumping enough oil to lubricate the lifters. an if the oil pressure is ok you might have to get the valves adjusted it could have a worn or slightly bent rod.if you have to replace oil pump expect high prices cause it's a big job but the valve adjustment it shouldn't be to high.Oil Pump or Lifters??? Which one is it and approx how much will it cost to fix?
If it was the oil pump, chances are the engine would be seized by now. It is likely the lifters are collapsed. The the question becomes why? Any oil pump can go bad no matter what vehicle it is in. Start by using a engine flush. Then change the oil and filter and put in a engine conditioner designed to stop lifter noise.

1998 ZX6R Ninja not starting after oil change?

I changed the oil (synthetic blend) and it started fine but once I started riding it would not go into neutral. I would have to let it cool down for hours and then it would go into neutral. now it will not start. I pulled the tank and it has fuel in the filter but I pulled the fuel line that goes to the motor after the filter and when I crank it no gas is coming out the line. it will crank all day just not start.

I heard it could be clutch sensor, kickstand sensor, fuel pump, t.o.s or fuel pump relay. how do I test these to see what the problem is.1998 ZX6R Ninja not starting after oil change?
some tanks have a vacum pipe tap design that gives you a few spins to start the engine .if the engine then refuses to start it cant sense a vacum from the inlet manifold .If it cant sense a vacum then it refuses to let fuel through. If it is this type of stupid fuel tap design then check the vacum tap sensor pipe has a tight seal and no air leaks.Air leaks on this pipe will keep the tap closed .they can aslo be a ***** when connected to autochoke carbs.1998 ZX6R Ninja not starting after oil change?
It sounds like either the fuel filter is clogged, the fuel petcock is shut off, or the fuel pump or relay is shot.

On my SV, if the clutch isn't pulled, or if the kickstand is down while in gear, my spark is cut and my bike won't crank. If your bike behaves the same way, that's a quick test for those two sensors.

My oil pump went bad under some interesting circumstances, how should I best handle this situation?

Ok, so I bought a car that had been sitting for around three years, first thing I did was take it to get the oil/fluids all changed and everything checked out, then I added some fuel treatment. I ran one errand and went to work yesterday, then this morning on my way home the main oil seal and the oil pump bit the dust. I noticed the oil leaking out of my car looked black, like it had never been changed, granted the car had been sitting and without a complete engine flush it should be expected to be dirty but it looked pretty bad, and the oil filter also looks like it wasn't changed, extremely dirty can't even make out any brand name or anything on it.

I'm working on getting my money back for the car, but I want to know if there is some kind of action I can take against the place that %26quot;changed%26quot; my oil.

Is it a possibility that for them to have to pay for the repairs to the vehicle? According to the receipt they checked the oil pressure and such, and with the oil pump about to go out hypothetically it should have been kinda off. Also on the receipt it says they cleaned my windshield, vacuumed the car and checked my wipers which they clearly did not.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. My oil pump went bad under some interesting circumstances, how should I best handle this situation?
Sitting for three years first question why? 2nd question was the mechanic who checked it out a referral from the guy you bought the car from?

If your written bill says they performed services that were clearly not performed why did you wait instead of complaining right away?

As far as a mechanical failure goes not all will give tell tell signs that they are about to fail.

As far as being charged for an oil and filter change that you did not receive, well I am sure that if you make a big enough fuss you will get a free oil and filter change outside of that it would probably become a legal issue. My oil pump went bad under some interesting circumstances, how should I best handle this situation?
The oil change shop, can not be held responsible. Many of these workers, are not mechanics. The chances of winning is zero,i'm afraid. My oil pump went bad under some interesting circumstances, how should I best handle this situation?
when you sign the form to get the oil changed, the company cant be held liable to any damages to your car. Unless that is, it's negligent meaning that the mistake was obvious, stupid, and caused major damage.

Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?

$230! Granted, this was for a synthetic oil change. However, the oil change place hit me (again) with auto transmission fluid and power steering fluid change rec. So, I went for it. This is for a 2005 Chrysler T%26amp;C (caravan). I have about 77,000 miles and haven't done these changes since I bought it new in '05.

In general, is this kind of stuff necessary on this kind of vehicle? Also, how hard would it be to do it myself? They said they had some sort of pump for the power steering, etc. I don't have that, but I do have a pretty good toolset, jack, etc. I've got another car (2000 SAAB 9-3) that has about 60,000 on it. So, I also want to know what I need to do on it at this time beyond the usual repairs and oil changes. It has a manual transmission. Thanks for any help!Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
That is a chunk all at once but they should be done. The price does not seem out of line for what they did. As for doing it yourself, the trans fluid is hard to do since you should flush the cooling lines and the torque converter as well. That is why they use an in-line fluid exchange while the car is running.

The Saab should also have the fluids changed but the manual can be done by you since it won't have cooling lines to mess with. I'd wait untill I needed a clutch and do it when the trans is out.Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
all you need is a bucket to catch the oil manual transmissions no advantage in changing the oil.. power stearing change oil what a rip off.. synthentick oil is not needed.. if you change the oil every 3 thousand and the filter.. use a straight viscosity 30 in the winter 40 and 50 in the summer.. all you need is a 5/8 wrench to open the oil drain.. the used oil place in a five gallon can.. the places that change oil will take it and put in their tank no charge.. buy penns oil or valvoline ok .Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
tranny fluid is recommended every 30,000 p/s flush recommended every 15,000. trans isnt hard just drop the plug drain the oil and put plug in and refill p/s needs a pump to pump out fluid and refill. foreign vehicles normally call for maintenance services every 30,000 miles call dealer for a service menu. do not flush if you havent done it from the start could damage trannyDid I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
Referring to the owner's manual for recommended maintenance intervals is the only way to know for sure if they told you to change the fluids before they actually needed to be changed. As far as I know, however, most modern automatic transmissions don't require a fluid change that soon (and they don't require the P/S fluid to be changed that soon either...)

You can change your own oil at home using a set of ramps, an oil collection pan, a crescent wrench (for the oil plug) and a filter-wrench for the oil filter in less than 30 minutes. As long as you have somewhere to dispose of the oil (like Autozone or a local recycling center), it's easy. Changing other fluids can be more difficult - often times it's easy to drain the fluids (like in a transmission), but hard to re-fill them.Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
Okay as a mechanic, I say every 30000 miles you need to get your tansmission serviced. but thats only on an automatic. the power steering flush i dont understand unless the fluid was burnt up. The amount is not that bad because of the amount of work and the prices of synthetic oil. But these are all things you can do. you do have to be very careful when you do a trans. service though. oil change is no problem. but if you hve the right guy looking at it when you go in he can inform you of a major problem you might have in the future.Did I just get rooked for an oil change, tranny, and power steering fluid change?
Sounds like they they took you for a ride in you own car and you don't remember. You should be able to get a service manual from your local library to help you. doing the oil changes is not too hard once you have done it it will be easier next time

As for a pump a large syringe with a plastic tube attached will do. Nearly all the cheep tools you can get from your cheaper auto shops

  • Do I need to change my oil? It looks clean!?

So, I'm at about 6,000 miles since my last oil change. I was going to get it changed today -- but I checked the dipstick first. The oil is above the %26quot;full%26quot; mark and it looks like a nice, clean translucent brown oil color.

How can this be? Shouldn't it be dirty/sludgy by now?

I am thinking... I have taken my car to the shop a couple of times recently. Once was to get my fuel pump replaced, the other to fix an engine valve. At any rate, could it be that the mechanic changed my oil without telling me?

I guess I should call him and ask...Do I need to change my oil? It looks clean!?
You should call and ask, but, if you had to have a valve fixed, your oil probably was changed.Do I need to change my oil? It looks clean!?
Most places tell you to change oil every 3,000 miles but in reality you can go 5,000 and still be ok. I would change the oil and filter now.Do I need to change my oil? It looks clean!?
The mechanic may have changed it without saying. You might be best off just replacing it as cheap as it is to do so.Do I need to change my oil? It looks clean!?
No one in UK changes their oil under 10,000 miles it just isn't necessary with multigrade oils.

Your mechanic may not have told you he changed the oil but he sure would have billed you lol.Do I need to change my oil? It looks clean!?
your right about the mechanic could have changed the oil when it was in for the valve problem, call him and ask, if it has been 6,000 miles you need to get it changed.

    Chrysler Crossfire oil change?

I just purchased a 2004 Crossfire. The first thing I did was change the oil. I read many comments on oil changes for this car, removing under guard, putting the car on jacks, it all sounded nuts. Being a boat owner, unfortuneately, I do now how to chang the oil through the dipstick. I bought a 20 dollar hand pump for my boat at Walmart a few years ago. The pump threads right to the boat dipstick and draws the oil in just a few minutes. On the Crossfire I had to use an acessory tube that is like a straw. I still drew the oil in less than five minutes. This is easy and simple. You don't have to get under the car and from what I understand this is the way Mercedes deos it. Try it you have nothing to lose. No matter how novice you are you will have success. You will want to change all of your oil this way. Good luck.Chrysler Crossfire oil change?

what about the oil filter? if chrysler sees the factory filter on there and there is engine trouble you may have a long fight for warranty repairs.also make sure the right oil is used. that too can void the warranty, but that is a very good idea

2000 Dodge Durango oil gauge dips to 0 at slow downs and brief stops?

I recently purchased a 2000 durango with 89000 miles when I first got it the check engine light came on. I went to Autozone and got codes P0206 and P0306. Changed oil and checked Fuel Ign 6. After wiggling the injector and adding some cleaner. All lights went off. Until wifey drives to work Monday as soon as she exits and slows down the ck gauges light comes on and the oil gauge drops to zero no more than 2-5 seconds than back about normal. No other gauges have this issue. I am thinking it could be a oil pump switch. If so I would have to drop the motor to replace. (If you could see my smile) But before I start I am wondering if anyone have any thoughts why it would do this and how to repair. I double and triple cked my fluids and all is well.2000 Dodge Durango oil gauge dips to 0 at slow downs and brief stops?
It could be a bad sending unit and no you won't have to %26quot;drop the motor%26quot; to change it.

It could also mean you have a plugged pickup screen or worn oil pump, which requires oil pan removal, or worn crankshaft or camshaft bearings which means pull the engine (as opposed to drop).2000 Dodge Durango oil gauge dips to 0 at slow downs and brief stops?
The oil pressure switch should be located around the oil filter area.

Auto zone has a special socket you can use or purchase, it maybe a 15/16 deep well socket

Un clip connection, remove sender/switch, some oil may leak out, only about a half a cup

replace switch and connection2000 Dodge Durango oil gauge dips to 0 at slow downs and brief stops?
Don't know what oil you are using but a lot of people think they should be using a thicker oil. Think of a drinking straw. Is it easier to suck(pump) honey or water. If you are using a 10W-40, I recommend a 5W-30.

But it could be your oil pump.2000 Dodge Durango oil gauge dips to 0 at slow downs and brief stops?
sounds like you have a week oil pump that may be about to go out. If the oil isn't low or to thin.2000 Dodge Durango oil gauge dips to 0 at slow downs and brief stops?
What engine is in it? A 318?

Where is the sending unit located at on your engine?

I had an old Ford 460 once that made very little oil pressure at idle, but personally, I think your sending unit is probably at fault, %26amp; (remember, %26quot;personally%26quot; is the operative word) if that sending unit is truly wedged in somewhere so tight that you are going to have to pull the engine to get at it (%26amp; I can actually see where that could be possible, nothing clean %26amp; sanitary about the new breed under the hood) I would keep driving it with my fingers crossed.

I would think that if you are truly driving with inadequate oil pressure, that engine should be rattling %26amp; giving you some kind of warning.

    Good luck.

I already had this problem and i change the pump two times and it still doesn't pick up any oil. we already blinded it.

I already try I tried installing an analog oil pressure gauge to monitor how strong is the PSI of the oil pump, and try cleaning all the chambers of the engine block starting from the oil strainer up to the cam caps, the if still this dose not work I'll be recommending you to buy at lease a brand new oil pump rather than buying pre owned or surplus.......Thanks for your answers but not solved %26quot;the honda Civic pump oil.?

My 95 Impala ss was just start the car pump the brake 3 times then shut the car off and do it with it off is there something like this on this model of truck or doest the dealership have to reset it thanks for any info2003 Chevy Silverado Oil Change Light?
THESE GUYS ARE RIGHT. BUT IT IS ACCORDING TO WHERE THE LIGHT IS. SOME HAVE AN ACTUALL LIGHT THAT LOOKS LIKE AN OIL LAMP. OTHERS HAVE A DIGITAL READING ACROSS WHERE THE MILEAGE IS SHOWN. OTHERS SHOW AND ENGINE BLOCK. EITHER WAY CUT THE KEY ON BUT DO NOT START. PUMP THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR 3 TIMES WITHIN 5 SECONDS. WAIT!!! IF YOU HAVE THE ENGINE BLOCK OR THE OIL LAMP SYMBOL IT WILL START BLINKING WHEN IT IS RESET AND YOU CAN CUT THE KEY OFF AND START THE VEHICLE AND THE LIGHT SHOULD GO OFF. IF YOU HAVE THE DIGITAL ONE IT WILL READ OIL LIFE RESET. THEN YOU CAN CUT THE KEY OFF AND START THE ENGINE. EITHER WAY IT SHOULD ONLY TAKE A FEW SECONDS TO DETERMINE WHETHER IT IS RESET. SOMETIMES YOU DO HAVE TO DO THIS MORE THAN ONE TIME.2003 Chevy Silverado Oil Change Light?

How much is a tune up,water pump and all weather tires?

This is my first car- it's a 1989 cheverolet cavalier. I just recently got an oil change and a leak fixed and they discovered the water pump also needs replacing. It probably needs a tune up, an alignment for sure and new front tires.

How long can a honda accord last with 224,000 miles?

One of my aunts friends was really generous and gave to me for a free a 1994 honda accord EX with 224,000 miles. I will be using it to go to school and commuting. It runs really well and is in excellent condition considering the miles. When i got it i had to replace the water pump and oil change. How long does these cars last for? Many of my friends are saying the car is at the end of its lifeHow long can a honda accord last with 224,000 miles?
personally i have had a 85 honda dx which we drove to about 300k miles before it blew the original motor, nissans, mazda and hondas are noted for being able to run good for high miles, if you don't get a good enough answer on here talk to a local mechanicHow long can a honda accord last with 224,000 miles?
It depends on how well it was maintained. Today's cars can last a long time with proper care. How long can a honda accord last with 224,000 miles?
My brother got about 600k out of his. though that was with excessive maintenance. How long can a honda accord last with 224,000 miles?
Japanese cars usually last longer than domestic cars. My 1979 Toyota Celica was still running perfectly at 254,000 miles when I sold it. My cousin's 1986 Nissan truck is at 400,000 miles now. Just give it a regular oil change and don't let it overheat and it will still go a long way. Also use STP stop leak to condition the gaskets and avoid future leaks. How long can a honda accord last with 224,000 miles?
I had a 91 Accord and when I sold it it had almost 550,000 miles on it. Yes just over half a million. Change the oil and maintain it Hondas are hardcore. And be nice to it. No burn outs or high speed parking ramp decents. How long can a honda accord last with 224,000 miles?
First off how does the engine run , is there any knocking noises or tapping noises? If it was kept up by previous owners , regular oil changes etc that engine could last 600,000 kms\375,000 miles and on avg they last at least 400,000kms\250,000. If you look at the average driver and how much they drive yrly your car's engine has at least about 2.5 yrs left. So if your only going to drive it back and forth to school you'd be driving it half of the 10,000 miles people drive yrly, therefore you could drive it 5 yrs.

If I was you I'd take a good look at car the underneath , rust , exhaust and under the hood too to see if anything looks faulty etc. Key is really again based on how well the previous owners took care of it . I think personally if the cars engine sounds good and your car drives well , changes gears etc smoothly , accelerates well without any funny engine vibrations or hesitations , you probably have a well maintained engine.

You know those engines are pretty good engines , what id be also wondering if the timing chain or belt was ever done. Your cars mileage is right around the mileage were timing chains or belts go. But again if the car is running well I highly doubt the timing has any problems , especially if the car accelerates evenly and runs smoothly.

How do I know the bearings are bad?

I have a 350 in my vehicle (I believe it's a run of the mill engine, year is approx. 1984) and I believe the bearing to be bad. At first I thought it was the oil pump, but have been lead to believe other wise. The symptoms are low oil pressure once the engine warms up (and I am running 20/50 weight with an added qt. of lucas oil) and a knocking noise that accompanies the low oil pressure. I have changed the oil pump once to a high volume oil pump and that did not resolve the issue. How do I know the bearings are bad?
A lot of engines get rebuilt by people who are less than knowledgeable.

A mechanic can tell you for sure - just go to one you trust. It sucks being a woman and mechanics think they can pull crap on you and sell you stuff you don't need. How do I know the bearings are bad?
It's hard to tell without hearing the sound but it sounds like piston rod bearings. It can be repaired and it's easier in some cars than others. A lot depends on how easy it will be to take the oil pan off, as the bearings are accessible through the bottom of the engine.

If you decide to have this repaired, it's probably a good idea to replace the main bearings as well. The main bearings support the crankshaft and are probably worn if your rod bearings are worn. The main bearings will also be accessible with the oil pan off.How do I know the bearings are bad?
there are cam, rod, and main bearings in a engine, not enough info, and what idiot told you to change the oil pumpHow do I know the bearings are bad?
A knocking sound and low oil pressure when warm are almost a certain sign of either rod or main bearing problems. If the rest of the vehicle is in good shape, you should be able to get a rebuilt engine installed for less than $1500. That might beat the crap out of buying another car and taking on new financing. How do I know the bearings are bad?
Sorry, I though you were talking wheels. I had oversized tires on my car and wore out the bearings. Felt like I was driving on speed bumps. How do I know the bearings are bad?
It's most likely main bearings. The crank will need to be polished or turned and new new bearings installed. $250 if you do it yourself. How do I know the bearings are bad?
listening to you it sounds like you know the main bearings are bad but need to confirm it.

As your engine idles just lightly give the motor some gas you should hear the rods rattle when you lift off the gas and you can decide which one it is by removing and grounding each spark plug ( if you haven't done this Don't it can be dangerous if you don't know how.) the point is if your rods are knocking you need a new engine

Oil pressure drops when coming to stop. 95 Dakota 318?

My Dakota has over 200k and a week and a half ago I checked t he oil after midnight and found no oil on the stick. I guesstimated on how much to put it and left it. Turns out I put 1/2 quart over. Yesterday I drove 90 miles to the lake and on my way home whenever I came to a stop my pressure would drop to L mark. Then would come back after I stopped or started accelerating. I immediately changed oil and filter. But problem still occurs and only occurs after the engine is warmed up.

I would hate to have to replace the oil pump. I don't have much time.

BTW: this truck usually tows a trailer everyday. (but hasn't since I put 2 much oil in)

Also you can faintly smell burnt oil when you come to a stop (before I changed oil and after High revs)

(does not have a burnt oil smell after oil change.Oil pressure drops when coming to stop. 95 Dakota 318?
Possibility of oil passages clogged due to age. Could explain low pressure when coming to a stop. Excess oil doesn't generally cause any problem other than those associated with bringing it up to the level of the crankshaft in the oil pan which will whip it into a foam. That could of course cause problems.

I'd recommend starting with an oil passage block cleaning (at a shop).

Or, if you're mechanically inclined ... remove the oil pan, clean out the oil pan, and the pump pickup and screen.Oil pressure drops when coming to stop. 95 Dakota 318?
The oil pressure gauge reading is supposed to drop to it's lowest acceptable level at hot engine idle. That's normal. The only question is, what the true shop oil pressure gauge reading is at hot engine idle. You'll have to either buy a professional oil pressure gauge or take it to a shop. It should read more than 12 psi.

at that mileage you could have a worn out pump. at idle it cannot produce the pressure, but off idle, things do improve. the oil leaks could account for the smell. time to do an actual oil pressure test with a separate gage.Oil pressure drops when coming to stop. 95 Dakota 318?
normally when you put in too much oil it can leak out the rear main seal, that could be the smell when you stop because of the oil on the exhaust. the oil gets thin when it warms up.

  • I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?

A few months ago, I noticed my oil was low, so I bought 5 qts of cheap oil and added it to my engine instead of taking it for an oil change. It ran fine for the past few months..This weekend I had my water pump, serpentine, and timing belts changed. The mechanic told me, the motor oil was overfilled and recommended I get an oil change. There wasn't any oil leak. So today I had a high mileage oil change at WalMart. They also told me my oil was over filled when they checked it, and that I have an oil leak.Again, yesterday there was no leaks. Now I have a big oil leak, and my car shuts off when I am idle. What could have happened? Did walmart mess up my oil change? or could it have been the mechanic who changed my belts? or am I to blame for being cheap and changing my oil myself and overfilling it without changing the filter?.Also how do I fix this. Please HelpI overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
overfilling is just as bad as not enough. and you should always change the oil filter whenever you change the oil. just unscrew your oil plug and let some run out, into a container or course.I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
Overfilling the oil can damage the piston rings among other things. I suggest draining the oil to the correct level. I would never change the oil without changing the filter. You car must have been almost empty of oil to require that much oil.I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
1 stop trying to blame others for your lack of car care

2 sometimes stuff happens..[ie you walk into a room,,turn on lite,,bulb blows...whos fault? no one]

3 overfilling oil can cause leaks,,bearing damage,,,

4 maybe you need tune up.....I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
You live and learn by your mistakes, check your valve covers and clean up the engine to isolate the leak. And do what you can to fix.I overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?
Yes it can damage your seals and you need to look to find the source of the leak the first two areas would be the drain plug bolt area sometimes when being replaced after removal it might not be as tight as it is supposed to be or it was over tightened and stripped, second area would be to look around the new filter area if their is oil leaking around where it is mounted in may not be on as tight as it should be, I have witnessed many times that the technician may have not removed the old filter seal and put another one on meaning you have two seals and the oil could be leaking from that area, the QUALITY OF A 6.00$ AN HOUR EMPLOYEE AT WALL MART or any other company is risky at best, go back to wall mart do not let any one touch the car except because you stated they changed the oil and you did not have a leak prior to the change ask them to re inspect the bolt on the drain pan and the filter area, ask them if the can determine the area where the oil may be coming from if it is a steady leak the should be able to (with flashlights) to determine where it may be coming from, also be Leary if the striped the bolt many times the will not tell you because they were the last company to work in that area and they do not want to eat the repair if needed. Take notes of what they tell you so you can see if they are contradicting any of their responses to you. I do know over filling the oil can lead to many problems with several Items. What kind of car and engine do you have and did the oil leak start after the water pump was changed .. but by all means you need to determine where is the leak coming from that is the starting point ,then we can determine at what stage or part of the repair that may have caused this leak

Remember since you are losing oil check the oil level first thing in the morning before you start the car, you may have to add a little oil to get to your next destination and this is serious as if the oil is dripping on the exaust area it could cause you car to catch on fire.

E-mail me and I will give you my phone so I can chat with you about this

HAVE A GOOD DAY, JackI overfilled my car engine with motor oil and did not change the oil filter. Can this damage my car?

Air in 1977 Honda Express NC50 oil lines, any ideas why? And how to remove them?

I recently changed the oil (Polaris 2-stroke Synthetic) and I noticed air bubbles in the oil lines. I followed the instructions on how to bleed the oil pump, but I still get air in the lines! I've tried everything to get (and keep) them out.Air in 1977 Honda Express NC50 oil lines, any ideas why? And how to remove them?

How much horsepower can I get out of a 1990Chevy 305 TBI? And How?

    I have a 1990 Chevy Camaro RS. With a 305 TBI. Stock I think is 170hp.

I've resealed %26amp; cleaned the oil pan, put a new oil pump, changed the timing belt, resealed %26amp; cleaned the intake manifold, and a few other tune ups.

What should I do to get some more horsepower out of this engine?

My budget is about $500 for parts. How much horsepower can I get out of a 1990Chevy 305 TBI? And How?
A $500 budget is tough to work with but here is a big hp boost combination if you can go up to about $725.

    Crane HI-6S Multi-Spark Ignition (Part Number: 6000-6302) $191.99

    http://www.jegs.com/i/Crane/270/6000-630

Crane cam (Grind Number: HR-284-2S-12 IG) $319.95 plus about $25 for a cam change gasket set

Turbo City Hi Flow Small Block Throttle Body $179.95

    http://www.turbocity.com/product_info.ph

And then if you can scrape up another $114.71, to bring it all together and get 'almost' the most horsepower available, I suggest you add a JET Stage 2 Performance Chip (Part : 19010S)

    http://www.performancecenter.com/partnum

I said %26quot;almost%26quot; the most horsepower available because after the mods it would be better to take your car to a speed shop and get a dyno tuned custom burn chip specific for your setup. But that alone would cost nearly $500, so the JET Stage 2 Performance Chip is your next best option. How much horsepower can I get out of a 1990Chevy 305 TBI? And How?
try an after market air filter like k%26amp; n 50 bucks and true dual exhaust system maybe some good glass packs or cheap flowmaster from 180 to 400 bucks. there is also a tornado which is supposed to help with air mixture about 40 bucks and a throttle body spacer that could help with air fuel mixture also about 50 to 100 bucks depending on which one. the difference is small individually but does help,How much horsepower can I get out of a 1990Chevy 305 TBI? get a 750 holley and a manifold and two 2.5'' exhausts.

Chev motors don't have timing belts they have a timming chain. How much horsepower can I get out of a 1990Chevy 305 TBI? And How?

Why is my oil light on in my 2004 chrystler Sebring?

The oil light came on in my 2004 Chrystler Sebring. I changed the oil to no avail. How do I check the sending unit for the light to see if that is the problem? Where is it? What are the chances of a bad oil pump or plugged oil galleries? Why is my oil light on in my 2004 chrystler Sebring?
If the light is the oil change reminder light, there is a reset procedure to follow, though some will reset on their own over time. Check your owner's manual for proper procedure. If it is the oil pressure warning light, then there is either a problem with the sending unit/wiring, or there might actually be an oil pressure problem. If you don't have the tools for checking/changing the sender a trip to the mechanic may be necessary. Why is my oil light on in my 2004 chrystler Sebring?
Did you reset the indicator after you changed the oil?Why is my oil light on in my 2004 chrystler Sebring?
You have to find the oil sending unit and screw an oil gauge into the hole to know for sure, hopefully it is the sending unit, dont drive it at all tho. You will fry the engine if its not pumping oilWhy is my oil light on in my 2004 chrystler Sebring?
if your engine is,nt knocking then it,s safe to say it,s not the oil pump. i would have to say you have a bad oil sending unit. they are usually by the oil filter. it could be bad or the wire going to it is loose or off.

How can I improve my oil pressure without replacing oil pump?

This is a 1995 Silverado 5.7 4x4 1500. It seems to me that the 113,000 original miles on it are too low of miles to have caused a drop in oil pressure but maybe it has something to do with the vehicle setting up for 5 years or because I used SeaFoam and didn't change the oil after I added it and it caused my oil to thin out. When I start the truck, I have good oil pressure. I'm running right at about 50 psi. When the truck get's warmed up though, it drops down to about 20-25 psi at about 1500 RPM. I didn't think anything of it until I saw a friend's oil pressure gauge and his dropped to about 20psi if he didn't have his foot on the gas, but as soon as he put his foot on the gas it would jump back up to 40psi.How can I improve my oil pressure without replacing oil pump?
Did you ever change the oil and filter after putting the SeaFoam in? That's where you should probably start. Once you get the proper viscosity oil and new filter, your oil pressure may improve. How can I improve my oil pressure without replacing oil pump?
Are you still running with that crap Sea Foam in the engine. If yes change your oil and stop messing up you engine, it won't last long if you keep putting that crap in there and not take it out.How can I improve my oil pressure without replacing oil pump?
If you haven't changed the oil after the SeaFoam yet, what are you waiting for. If you did, try a slightly higher viscosity oil. If you have been using 10W-30, try 10W-40, or 20W50 and see if that has any effect. How can I improve my oil pressure without replacing oil pump?
It's been my experience that your oil pressure that you describe in your question is normal for these engines.

It's been my experience that replacing the oil pump will not improve this pressure to any significant amount. You can disassemble the engine and tighten up all of the bearing clearances - but this is simply a case where the expense and time won't nearly justify the end.

Change the oil and filter - perhaps a slightly heavier oil - and simply drive it.How can I improve my oil pressure without replacing oil pump?
Your oil pump is acting perfectly normal in your Chevrolet. The only barn yard cheap way to increase oil pressure is by installing a higher pressure relief spring in the oil pump or bolting on a Melling high volume pump. High pressure and high volume oil pumps rob you of horsepower.

Stop dumping trick additives in the oil pan. Read the handbook in your glove compartment in the oil section. If you don't have time to read it I'll tell you what says: GM does not recommend adding additives to the crankcase! Stick with the factory recommended 5W-30 motor oil. Valvoline, Havoline, Mobil 7000, Brad Penn and Kendall have above average derergent packages. If you feel you need slightly more oil pressure at low RPM do not go any higher in viscosity grade than 10W-30.

There is a delusional person who answers questions here who claims to work for a Chevrolet dealership. His claim to fame is advising people to use non energy conserving 10W-40 when the odometer reaches 75,000 miles and (get this) 20W-50 when the odometer reaches 100,000 miles. He goes on to say: That's what our dealership does. There's not a car or truck company in America that recommends 10W-40 or 20W-50 in the factory hand book. How can I improve my oil pressure without replacing oil pump?
I agree with LeAnne and Country Boy - that is normal. If the pressure reads below 10 psi at idle you should get it checked, but most engines are fine with as little as 4-6 psi at idle.

Please resist the temptation to use higher viscosity oil, though. The old mantra was %26quot;more pressure%26quot; but the modern mantra is %26quot;more flow.%26quot; It is not the trivial pressure of the oil that keeps the metal separated, it is the film strength. That means the crucial part is getting oil reliably into even the closest tolerances in the engine and in that way doubling the viscosity produces the same flow as cutting the pressure in half. Of course there is a limit, but if you use the viscosity the owner's manual calls for (regardless of the engine's age) you won't go wrong.

Oil has to be one of the most controversial subjects in car care (please don't get the whole synthetic vs dino oil debate stirred up again!) but the sources provide what I think is a good balance of basic info.

No Oil Pressure.....Is it the Main Bearings ?

My 97 S-10 Blazer started tapping one day and now there is no oil pressure. I paid someone to change the oil pump and it's still doing it... now it sounds like a rod is knocking. What else could the problem be? The Main bearings????????? How hard is that to fix if so?No Oil Pressure.....Is it the Main Bearings ?
It sounds like you spun a bearing and it is eroding your crankshaft. It's only a matter of time before you throw a rod.

You have to have your crankshaft and bearings replaced. It's not cheap! No Oil Pressure.....Is it the Main Bearings ?
if the oil pump is driven by the distributor gear the shaft that connects them or the gear itself may be damaged. shouldn' t be the bearings thoughNo Oil Pressure.....Is it the Main Bearings ?
Sounds like the oil pump or the cam gear that runs the oil pump failed. Either way, running an engine without adequate oil pressure can ruin both the rod bearings and the main bearings and ruin the crankshaft. Very expensive to fix since the engine needs a complete overhaul. No Oil Pressure.....Is it the Main Bearings ?

How can I tell if I need a new oil pump for my Explorer?

When I got my oil changed, the guy said I needed a new oil pump. I've been to this 'jiffy lube' place before and the have told me I need a bunch of stuff I didn't need- dad checked it out but he's not around today-is there anyway I can tell if I need a new pump (without crawling under the car or getting too dirty)? How can I tell if I need a new oil pump for my Explorer?
Generally speaking, somebody that does oil changes as a full-time career is not going to be qualified to telepathically diagnose the condition of your internal engine components.

The oil pump is inside the oil pan. That guy has never seen your oil pump, let alone actually tested it to determine its condition. If he thinks that your oil pressure is low, that's a valid concern, but I highly doubt that the pump is the source if that's the case. There are more likely scenarios for low oil pressure than a weak or bad pump. How can I tell if I need a new oil pump for my Explorer?

take out the oil pressure sender and install an 1/8 npt thread pressure gauge and see how it works

40psi idle to 65psi in high rpm but check with the specs to know exactly the correct psi

and what i think the problem you have is not the oil pump

need more info so i can tell you what is going onHow can i check oil pump in 92 mazda truck if going bad w/o taking off oilpan?
You can wet test the oil pressure. If it's within specs, the pump is fine.

If the oil pressure is low, it gets a bit more complicated. It might be the pump, or it might be excessive clearances or a leaking or blown out oil passage plug in the engine.

Regardless, the first step should be to simply test the oil pressure against the specification.

How do I increase my oil pressure?

I have a 88 Mazda truck with a machanical oil pump, new engine, and I still have plenty of time until I need to change my oil and filter. My pressure starts off fine, but once I have driven for a hour or two it drops to almost 0 at idle. I have the right oil weight in the truck. How do I increase my oil pressure?
it might be your oil pump going out. While your truck isn't running the oil will drain to the bottom of the pan and make it easier for your pump to draw oil in. As you drive it becomes more difficult for an oil pump to draw oil. I would get your pump checked out asap. How do I increase my oil pressure?
If its possible, get a high volume oil pump. How do I increase my oil pressure?

add a product like STP or motor honey. works for me.How do I increase my oil pressure?
You got big problems if you don't have a grantee on that engine as either the crankshaft or the bearings are NFG.How do I increase my oil pressure?
sounds like the bearings may have too much space between them and the mains. most experts wold say to tear down a engine to check that before installing it, even if it came from mazda, gm or whoever. they also say as long as you have 10 psi on oil press for every 1000 rpm you don't have to worry about damaging anythingHow do I increase my oil pressure?
If you really are getting near o psi at a hot idle, you either have a bad oil pressure sensor or are going to be in trouble. The engine is getting a little worn out. How many miles? Oil pressure should be near 20 at least at idle. Low oil pressure will wear out the crank and cam bearings fairly quickly. Hopefully all it is is a bad sensor or gauge. I would hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge and verify the correct pressure readings to find out if the problem is external or inside the engine. To adjust, repair, or replace the oil pump, you need to drop the oil pan, anyway, so while you are in there you might want to replace the crankshaft bearings. If the engine has tons of miles on it, I'd just rebuild it or replace it with a rebuilt or new one.How do I increase my oil pressure?
if you are sure that the gauge is working properly then you might have a weak oil pump. your best bet is to replace your pump. How do I increase my oil pressure?

  • Where should I go to get my 2001 Mercedes ML320 oil changed and is it too complicated to do myself?

I've been reading up on some of the needs of the vehicles in terms of changing the oil (synthetic oil, dipstick pump, ect) and was wondering where would be the cheapest place to take it (more looking for a franchise or suggestion, not an exact place but I live in LA if anyone has an exact place) and around how much would it cost? Also, would it be too complicated to do myself if I got the tools for it?Where should I go to get my 2001 Mercedes ML320 oil changed and is it too complicated to do myself?
changing the oil is pretty simple. to do it yourself just buy a new oil filter, drain the oil by removing the oil plug, remove the old oil filter, install the new oil filter, put the oil plug back in, and add oil until it shows the proper oil level on the dipstick. Just make sure you don't run the car when there's no oil in it, it will damage the engine beyond repair within seconds if you start the car when there's no oil.

If you don't want to do it yourself, I suggest you steer clear of the quick-lube places. I've heard too many horror stories about places like Jiffy Lube. One of my coworkers had her car ruined because they didn't check the oil level and put in half of the required amount, which destroyed her engine. When I was younger they tried to trick me into paying for a transmission flush by lying to me about what my transmission fluid looked like. My dad found a wrench under the hood of his truck one time that a jiffy lube worker left behind.

I recommend you contact the dealership. They do the job right and they are usually pretty competitive on price. They want to get you in the habit of just going straight to them for repairs and maintenance. If you are comparing prices, make sure you are comparing the price for synthetic oil, most of the time the advertised price is for regular oil, and synthetic oil is extra. Where should I go to get my 2001 Mercedes ML320 oil changed and is it too complicated to do myself?
If you wanted cheap you shouldn't have gone for the Mercedes. Although it could be done anywhere, your best bet might be the dealer. It might be a bit higher, but they have the expertise to do it and do it right. And if by chance they find a problem they would have the tools and parts to fix it. Some of the inexpensive oil change places have been know to ruin drain plugs.Where should I go to get my 2001 Mercedes ML320 oil changed and is it too complicated to do myself?
It is very simple. A basic shop maual should show you where the drain and the filter are. Takes about 20 min start to finish. If you do it yourself, it should run you about $5 for the filter and around $2 a quart for the oil. Big savings over a chain place, and you get the piece of mind that it was done right.Where should I go to get my 2001 Mercedes ML320 oil changed and is it too complicated to do myself?

The price at the pump is always 3 months behind current events. Use it to your advantage. Same is true for a drop in oil prices. How come when oil goes to $100 a barrel prices at the pump go up but it dropped to $90 there was no change?
the gas stations have big tanks under the ground. They only get so much mark up due to fierce competition. (They make their reall money when you come in and buy that soda and chips.) So if you are paying $3.30, you can bet the gas station owner paid at least $3 a gallon for it when he had that big tank filled. The gas station owner or the corparation running the gas stations, determines the price. For the most part, the signs you see such as Shell, Citgo, etc are not the owners, the real owner pays for that sign so he can attract customers with the name recognition.

It's basically a game they have to play, They have to charge enough to cover the cost of what's all ready in the tank, and charge enough to cover the cost of what it's going to cost to fill that tank tommorow (which is why it always goes up faster than down), while at the same time keeping it low enough to not lose customers to the guy across the street. How come when oil goes to $100 a barrel prices at the pump go up but it dropped to $90 there was no change?

As far as losing customers across the street....in my area the price for gas is the same at every gas station in the city...and they all change their prices to the same price on the same day...but when I drive 15 miles to the next city, a gas station owned by the same person who owns one in my city will be a dime a gallon less....Price fixing is more like it.How come when oil goes to $100 a barrel prices at the pump go up but it dropped to $90 there was no change?

  • Oil pump ??

how did i take out the oil pan to change my oil filter and pump ?? in a dekota 2002 4x4 5 speed ??Oil pump ??
you are asking how you DID take it out? You should know since you took it out.

To change your oil filter, you DO NOT remove the oil pan!! Check with any auto parts store.Oil pump ??
Normally the oil pump is not changed unless you have no oil pressure. To drain the oil just remove the drain plug and catch the oil coming out. Use a oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter which is located next to the oil pan. Just be sure you have the correct filter and oil to put back in prior to starting the engine.Oil pump ??
why r u taking out the oil pump. is it just the oil filter u r looking for. the oil filter is om pass side .look through thec right front tire uu will see the oil filter. to get yhe oil pan off u will need to removethe motorOil pump ??
Wait wait. Slow down, Sexie. Normally I would be all for a do-it-yourself project but you really are not in the ball park. Your oil filter is outside the engine in plain sight. Removing the pan and oil pump is a big job especially with some engines. And you don't know that that is what is needed. It probably isn't! Put on a mini-skirt and get some lunk to look it (the car) over for you.

How do I reset my change oil light?

I done it once, can't quite remember, pump gas pedal 4 times. then turn key to acc? is that right??How do I reset my change oil light?
Turn the key to the on position which is the second key position. Press the gas pedal 3 times completely to the floor and then all the way off within 5 seconds of turning the key to the on position. The change oil will flash then go out and you will be all set. You need to be sure to press it 3 times smoothly up and down within 5 seconds or else it won't reset. It may take a few times to get it. Good LuckHow do I reset my change oil light?

Hiya bbunny3. Turn the key to the on position (do not start it). And then depress the fuel pedal to the floor 3 times, wait for a few seconds and that's it!.

I f you are doing your own oil changes -good for you. Don't forget to lubricate your door hinges and latches too. Makes them last the life of your car if you do. Also check all your fluid levels when you have the hood up. Brake fluid, antifreeze level, power steering fluid, transmission fluid(running in park-auto trans only).

Tire pressure is also a regular maintainence check.

How do you change low oil level sensor on 95 caprice w/350 LT1?

I use quality oil and do my own oil change but the low oil level light is on more than off. Now I have had trouble starting the car. I was told that the sensor will cut the fuel pump off. On our 2000 chevy we have to turn the key forward and press the gas three times. It should be the same. If it doesn't work call your local chevy dealer or a auto shop. I would think they would tell you.

    Hope it works

How can I tell if my oil pump is going out?

I have an 01 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cylinder and my oil light only comes on when the car has been driven for a while and only when at idle. If I am at a light sitting it flickers and as soon as I start to go it shuts off. Any suggestions? I have changed my oil/filter and all levels are good. How can I tell if my oil pump is going out?
If it bothers you check the oil pressure sensor and replace it if it's off. It that doesn't work just keep driving until it burns up.

The reason the pressure goes low is due to excessive wear around the oiled engine parts. Oil is leaking past where it used to just (seep) into. All you can do to fix it is a major overhaul or replace the engine. How can I tell if my oil pump is going out?
Well, it sounds like your 8 year old car is starting to show some wear. Check with your own mechanic to be sure, but I'd say unless you are hearing valve chatter, the characteristic %26quot;tick tick tick%26quot; sound at an idle, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You could try a slightly heavier weight oil, if you're using 5-30 you might go to 10-40 for example.

I doubt it's the oil pump, they generally are a %26quot;pass/fail%26quot; thing and either work or don't. And if you had a problem with a dirty pick up screen, it would starve out for oil at any speed, not just at idle. How can I tell if my oil pump is going out?
Yeah, just to a straight 40 weight unless you live in a really cold climate. there are oils now for high mileage vehicles that do a good job. they're available at all the auto parts stores. Drive it until the rods start knocking. How can I tell if my oil pump is going out?
All ya gotta do is not idle the engine. There, I fixed it fur ya. Ok seriously, everybodies right, except the one about changing the oil press sensor. If you want to verify that the flickering light is in fact accurate you would plumb in a calibrated oil press guage and verify what the oil pressure actually is at idle. Not hard to do and doesn't cost nothing if you have a friend with a guage and the know how to plumb it into your system to do a quick check. How can I tell if my oil pump is going out?
Put in thicker oil and keep driving. How can I tell if my oil pump is going out?
you can tell alright ! after awhile you will hear a knocking noise if it goes out. if your engine sounds ok then it,s probably the oil pressure sending unit.
