Is it easy to replace the water pump on my 1990 Volvo 740 myself?

I am not an expert mechanic but have, in the past, done the work on my own vehicle myself. Not only change the oil, spark plugs, etc., but did replace a water pump and transmission on a vehicle I owned over a decade ago.

I don't have a service manual but will go to the public library today to see whether I can attempt the work myself. However, looking at the manual and doing the work myself is two very different things.

Has anyone, preferably not a seasoned mechanic, replaced their own water pump on a 1990 740 Volvo, or similar make? If so, can you tell me the level of difficulty, and how much time it took to do the work?Is it easy to replace the water pump on my 1990 Volvo 740 myself?
Yes you can do it and here are the steps......

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

Set the heater control to MAX heat.

Remove the expansion tank cap.

Open the draincocks on the right-hand side of the engine block and on the radiator, and drain the coolant into a suitable container.

Close the draincocks when the coolant is completely drained.

Remove the radiator shroud and fan.

Remove the lower radiator hose at the water pump.

If required, remove the retaining bolt for the coolant pipe beneath the exhaust manifold and pull the pipe rearward.

Remove the drive belts and water pump pulleys.

Remove the water pump bolts, washers and nuts.

Remove the water pump assembly.

How hard is it to replace a oil pump on a 97 cavalier 2.2?

I have a 97 cavalier with a 2.2 auto in it. It has 130k miles and the car has been serviced every 5k miles since new, but When warm, if I stop at a red light the oil pressure light comes on and the engine almost struggles and sometimes stalls. If I step on the gas a little the light goes out and it runs fine. I have 5-30 oil in it. I think I'm going to change it to 10-40 and see if that helps. Should I raise the rpms at idle by the adjustment? all signs seem to point to the oil pump. Id like to know what I'm getting into before I start working on it and end up working on it for days because didn't know what I was doing?! Thanks. How hard is it to replace a oil pump on a 97 cavalier 2.2?
1 try the 10 w oil FIRST

2 you cant adjust the idle [computer controlled nor should you

3 before you start taking it apart for oil Pump replace the sending unit...they often get clogged up setting off the light

4 I would keep driving it as is... 130K too soon for oil pump if you really did oil changes as you say...it could run to 200,000 as is without problemHow hard is it to replace a oil pump on a 97 cavalier 2.2?
well it kinda depends. i'm almost willing to be in that car you have to pull the motor so it won't be fun and if you don't have the skills to pull a motor and an engine stand you can't do it yourself.

    JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?

I just got almost for free Jeep 1988 4.2 . Did not run . I started changed fluids , oil etc , and engine is knocking like woodpicker .

To me soung like broken lifter ( my friends have same opinion ).

I know I shoud change camshaft and lifters . My question is -

-do I need remove engine head to do this job?

-maybe better idea is to buy another engine from junk-yard instal , use for while and in same time rebiuld this knocking ? -Any idea how much cost used complite engine -some links?

-how about remanufactired engines -avaliable on line for about $1400 ? -Are they OK -is it good price ?

I never had Jeep before , I like this vehicycle a lot , I would brigh this vehicycle to life again .

I know how to do most job , I just need good advices .

I will be happy if someone will give me some links about problem above , some advices .

How much will cost me to buy all parts needed to rebiuld engine by myself ?

Another problem with Jeep. I have automatic transmition -is OK-but when I stop on red light many times engine dies . Normal RPM is about 600 as should be . I did not do tune-up yet . Maybe is needed .

What is your opinion about this problem ?

Maybe I need change fuel pump ? Or maybe is some adjustment on this pump ?

And last question , power stering . When engine is warm , power steering does not work as good as when is cold . Is there some adjastment on power steering pump ?

Any help is needed . Thank you .JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?
Sounds to me like you might have a cracked flex-plate which can simulate the exact same noise as a lower engine knock. This could also be causing you transmission problem i would remove the inspection cover on the transmission bell housing spiflex-platexplate around and check for any cracks. On the power steering issue sounds like the fluid is reaching its boiling point after it warms up which it could be contaminated with water or something since it hasent been running. I would recommend draining the fluid and refilling it and also add some lucas power steering fluid and see what happens.JEEP YJ 4.2 -1988 - ENGINE question?
    Hi

For your power steering, any adjustment would be on the steering box

And I think your rpm`s should be up to about 850. For the knock, put in two qt/liter of transition fluid in the oil. (Take out about 2 qt) It is

mostly detergent and may clean the lifters. Its worth a try ! And leave

it in for a few days.

How can i tell if my fuel pump is going bad?

    i have a 1992 chevy lumina Z34 (3.4L DOHC V6 engine)

yesterday morning i started it it started fine but after school i tried to start it and it would crank but it wouldn't start and only way to keep it on was to rev it i got it goin for about 20 minutes and it turned it off and was able to start it. later i did the oil change and cleaned my spark plugs. after all this it sounded different and i don't have a clue why. and when i first got goin it was jerking and around 15 mh it stoped jerking and sounded right then around 60 it started to jerk and sound different again. then this morning it started it right up no troubles then i let it sit for a while and again it wouldn't start. well once again it got it goin and i got some fuel injector cleaner when i put some gas in it. and then i let it sit for like 20 minutes and it wouldn't start. so With all this could it be the fuel pump or what. How can i tell if my fuel pump is going bad?
ugh use a fuel pressure gauge on the rail key on engine off and key on engine on and compare to specsHow can i tell if my fuel pump is going bad?
I've had those symptoms, replaced the fuel pump, and nothing changed. Then someone looked at the fuel filter and it was completely hosed. So try changing that first, or at least taking a look at it.How can i tell if my fuel pump is going bad?
With the high cost of fuel, many people are running near empty, a lot. If you run out, you hose the fuel pump. If you run very low (below 1/16) you run a good chance of overheating the pump. I run a small amount (an ounce or two per tank full) of 2-stroke oil with my fuel to help lube the fuel pump. Follow the advice of checking fuel pressure at the injector rail, too.

How do you know its oil? Some cars use brake fluid in the power steering pump, and it resembles oil. Anyhow, there is a hose on the power steering reservoir. All you have to do is disconnect it. Make sure you have something to catch the fluid. How do you get motor oil out of your power steering pump. I didnt put it there please dont ask how it is there
you can buy power steering flush fluid .

Disconnect the return line to the pump.

put hose in a pail have someone start engine and poor fluid in reservoir.

After fluid flush poor 3-4 liters of power steering through system having someone start engine and you pooring in power steering fluid.

The return hose will have only a crimp clamp on it the presser line will a metal fitting on it.

    I would try this first.

Could have damaged the power steering system.

    Not cheap!!!

Remove the lowest hose on the power steering pump and just let it drain into a drain pan for a couple hours.

The biggest problem you're going to have is getting the power steering to reprime.

look at your pump......it has 2 hose,s.....the pressure hose is a high pressure hose...with fitting,s at both end,s.....don,t touch that one.....the other hose is the return hose....with simple hose clamp,s.......remove that one at the pump...direct it at an oil recovery pan.....attach a new hose to the pump...with a funnel attached to the other end.....fill the funnel with fresh power steering fluid....have a friend start your car.....while you keep the funnel full of new fluid......soon you will have flushed the contaminated fluid out while replacing it with fresh fluid at the same time......be sure to tighten the hose back to it,s original position when done......good luck! How do you get motor oil out of your power steering pump. i own a repair shop and the best way to get all of it out is take the lines loose on it and completely drain it,and make sure you have it all, i have ran across the same problem before, and the only true way to get all of it is take all the lines off of it and drain it all out ,and you may have to do this twice to get it all ,but it will come out of it,and it shouldn't hurt it ,and if it does you,ll be replacing a few parts, but hopefully all of it will come out, good luck hope this helps. How do you get motor oil out of your power steering pump. What John said, both my Subie and Beemer use ATF for the power steering. It gets burned and dirty. There might be a label on the cap, or it should say something in the owner's manual.

I don't own a repair shop, but if it was oil, it wouldn't work.

You do need some new fluid. Use a bulb type baster and suck out as much as possible. Then refill with fresh stuff. Run it for a week or so, then repeat. That should do it.

  • How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump on a 1990 Cadillac Seville?

Was previously having difficulty starting the car. I'd start the car up and then it would immediately shut off. Start the car a 2nd time and give it the gas, the car would run fine. Yesterday on the way to work, car broke down and won't restart at all. I put gas in it. Car also had tune up and oil change 2 months ago and spark plug wires were also changed out. So this is why I'm thinking it's the fuel pump. The car has a 4.5 liter V8 in it. How much is it to replace the fuel pump? How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump on a 1990 Cadillac Seville?
Parts and labor on the fuel pump plus draining the tank will be around $405.00 dollars.......

try replacing the fuel filter first. If it is blocked it will starve the engine of gas. Typically the fuel pressure builds and you notice herky jerky acceleration. How much does it cost to replace the fuel pump on a 1990 Cadillac Seville?
To have it replaced at an independent repair shop it should be around $213.00. At a dealership it will cost around $296.00. While your having this done, have the fuel filter changed also. Most fuel pump warranties require it. Hope this helps.

Is this quote "sound" for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?

    Hey everyone--

I am getting ready to replace my timing belt (80k), and I got quotes from several places. How much would you pay to get the job done?

The dealership quotes 795 with the belt, tensioner, water pump, and an oil change, where an independent mechanic quotes that he'd do the water pump, timing belt, serpentine belt, coolant flush, tensioner for 650. Is this good, or can it be better? Is this quote %26quot;sound%26quot; for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?
That sounds like a decent deal. You probably don't need a serpentine belt though so ask if he can lower the price for that. Most of the time when the serpentine belt goes it'll squeal. Is this quote %26quot;sound%26quot; for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?
the dealer will charge you an arm and a legg you can try a regular service station like easy lube or jiffy lube to do it and you can get the parts yourself from Kragen or Autozone. the belt itself should be around $30-40 and the labor should be around 100-150, but if you change your timing belt I suggest you change the water pump as well the labor shouldnt be that different (water pump is located in the middle of the timing belt) and since you have to chamge the water pump at some point anyway you can save on the labor cost. the pump itself is around $100-150

check for the prices at: http://shop.oreillyauto.com/PartTypes.asIs this quote %26quot;sound%26quot; for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?
LISTEN GIRLFRIEND!!! DO IT!!!! I just had my timing belt go (at 125K) after being an idiot and not getting it done sooner - like you are. The quote sounds a little high BUT based on my very latest experience it is necessary...dealerships are higher but supposedly better at fixing VW's. I'd try looking all over VW.com and ask the service counter about discounts--look at dealership website/newspapers/etc. I get service stuff in the mail a lot. Sign up for everything and register your VW online. Is this quote %26quot;sound%26quot; for a timing belt replacement on an 02 Jetta 2.0?
This is a good deal. I spent close to $1000, for my Audi timing belt change, that included a H20 pump, coolant, thermostat, rollers, and tensioner.

Ford ranger 3.0 how to unclog oil screen without pan removal?

i have a 94 ford ranger 3.0 4x4 manual trans. was working perfect now all of a sudden went to intermitent oil pressure, then quickly to no pressure and now clacety clacking at top of motor at valve covers. all things lead to remove oil pan and look though concensus is clooged screen or bad pump. At $1100 to have pan taken off (because motor must be pulled) any ideas to try to clean screen through drain plug hole or some dissolving agent? All the fluids are perfect in color and level. No smoke, idle is perfect, no lights. Just no pressure and noisy valves. And how do you know if it's the pump itself? any specific noises, dash lights etc? Was thinking of draining, inserting coathanger type wire to try to unclog screen for any improvement. If get improvement then would pay to have done. But to pay so much just to look is very dissapointing. Any %26quot;cheap cheat%26quot; idea out there to try. If you have changed your oil on a regular basis, it is very unlikely that it's clogged. running the engine without oil will ruin it VERY quickly. you can do this to clean everything (although I don't like running the engine without oil). put two quarts of transmission fluid in engine then fill it up with oil (any kind) run for 10 minutes. then drain and refill with your regular oil. that will clean the pump. in the old days this is how we would clean the shellac and varnish out of engine and the gunk (before the advent of cleaners in oil) if it still clatters then your pump is bad-have it fixed-trade it off-something cause it won't last long.Ford ranger 3.0 how to unclog oil screen without pan removal?
it might be your oil pressure sending unit, try that first, you might be hearing things that were already there,if your oil pump is shot you need a whole new motor( probably)Ford ranger 3.0 how to unclog oil screen without pan removal?
If you need to unclog your oil screen = = YOU HAVE MORE PROBLEMS than just a clogged oil screen!Ford ranger 3.0 how to unclog oil screen without pan removal?
if your looking for a quick fix don't the pressure regulator detent ball is stuck. do like others say and have the oil pump replaced or ruin the motor. double check with a Chilton manual because i believe that you can unbolt the engine mounts to raise the motor to get the oil pan off.Ford ranger 3.0 how to unclog oil screen without pan removal?
You might as well pull the engine and put another one in since you kept running it after the oil pressure started going and probably trashed it.

Low oil pressure in Olds Bravada?

I have a 2000 olds Bravada. When I idle at a light after driving it awhile, the gage for oil drops significantly and the check gage light comes on, but when I accelerate it goes back up to half. The oil was just changed in it a few weeks ago and the dipstick reads full. Is this a sign of needing to replace the oil pump? How much should it cost, roughly? This is a serious problem, correct? ( I have stopped driving it for now). Thanks!Low oil pressure in Olds Bravada?
Correct, it is a serious problem. The best way to tel lis remove the oil pressure sender and install an inline oil pressure guage. Then start the truck and see what it really is on a manual guage. If in fact the oil pressure is low the oil pump may be bad, or a bearing in the engine may be bad.

    Simple oil pump replacement $500-750

Bearings replaced $1500-3000Low oil pressure in Olds Bravada?
Take it to a shop and have them check whether the oil pressure sensor is working correctly. Your system use a electrical type system so the sender can and does go out off calibration and will need to be replaced. The shop should do an oil pressure test using a wet style gauge to get a accurate reading. This type uses oil pressure right to the gauge to test the pressure and will tell you if you need more than just a sensor.Low oil pressure in Olds Bravada?
If the pressure drop and flickering light started happen immediately after the oil change, I'd have someone check that the proper oil filter was installed. Also, the viscosity of the oil added may be too low. It would have to be very low viscosity, but it's worth mentioning. Of course, it is most likely an oil pump or bearing wear problem, but I'd still check the filter and oil weight. You may want to just try an oil change with one of the newer oils designed for higher mileage cars. they're marked as such. Good luck.Low oil pressure in Olds Bravada?
Now wait a minute. When you idle at a light the pressure is low and when you accelerate it goes back up to half. What is the oil pressure reading at half? 30 P.S.I., 45? It could be that your idle is too low. Do you have a Tach in your vehicle? When you are in drive at a stop, how many R.P.M.'s is the motor turning? It should be around 600. Any lower than that and the oil pressure will drop significantly. But that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. The oil pump delivers based upon the speed of the motor. So the faster the motor goes, the faster the oil pump goes. They're relative to one another.Low oil pressure in Olds Bravada?
you can drive as long you keep idle up enought to keep light out. It is expensive and a hard job. Consult a price guide at your library

Will an oil leak effect or cause over-heating?

I have a 97 Chevy Blazer, 2wd, 4dr. When I bought it for $1000, 4 months ago, I knew it had a small oil leak. I still thought it was a great deal, since the car still drove well and all else seemed in good condition. I had my dad look at it, and we initially thought the oil leak was a bad Oil Send/Receive Unit or Sensor. I'm still not sure if that's actually what the oil leak is due to or not because, I later determined that there was no way I could replace the part by myself....it's nestled in behind the engine....something way over my head.

Now for the reality, I'm a full time college student, there's no way I can afford to go to a mechanic. I feel reasonably confident in my abilities to fix most automotive problems, assuming I can even get to the problem.

Here's where it gets interesting: 2 months after I bought the truck, it started overheating. Not like smoke billowing out or anything, just way high into the red on the temp gauge. Then the overheating got bad enough for it to stall out on me one day. I did a full check of hoses, radiator and reservoir, here's what I found - a brownish-stain like build-up in the bottom of the reservoir; a lot of creamy looking gunk built up on the radiator cap; and the hose that runs from the water pump had a tear in it at the base where it connected.

Here's what I did : I flushed the reservoir and radiator (unhooked main hoses to allow free flow), with water as completely as I could. Water seemed to be making a full circulation, was coming out pretty clear once antifreeze was flushed out. I snipped the hose that had the tear above where the tear was, and re-clamped it to the base. I added fresh antifreeze to the reservoir and radiator, and cleaned the radiator cap.

The over-heating seemed to lessen a little, but then became sporadic after that...it would over-heat pretty quickly, and then drop back down to normal range....if i drove too much longer, it would rise back towards the red again.

So then I took a guess for the Thermostat, went and bought a top-of-the-line from Autozone, and replaced it.

    Still over-heating.

All this time, the oil leak is still present, it's cause still unknown. I'm having to put in about a gallon of oil once a month. Last time I checked the levels, (a week ago), the oil level seems to actually be a little high, though most of the oil on the dipstick looks way watered down. Not sure if it would do anygood to do an actual oil change since there's such a big leak. I also forgot to mention that I did check obvious things like the drain-pan plug and oil filter, when I first bought it, to make sure that wasn't the source of the oil leak, but everything seems to be nice and tight.

I also had a check light come on a couple months ago, and a diagnotic showed I needed to replace the Oxygen Sensor. I bought one, thinking I would replace...but jack-*** me, I didn't realize I have several. I'm still not sure how many I actually have, or where they all are. Since I bought the truck from someone else, I have no owner manual, and have yet to find a repair manual ffrom an AutoZone. Oy.

I have no idea if the Oxygen Sensor could be affecting the oil leak...or the over-heating.

Yesterday, after driving home from school...while the truck was still hot and in the red, i opened the hood....there's a hissing noise...and smoke coming from what looks like the alternator (though the could be from below that..?).

As of two weeks ago, the truck is now nearly undrivable for more than 5-7 minutes. After approximately 7 minutes of driving, the temp gauge is WAY passed the red, and any further driving will cause the car to completely stall out. A new development: Now when it stalls out, a battery symbol appears on my dash, the brakes get rock-hard and won't pump at all, followed by an immediate stall. When the truck is running, the battery gauge sits right in the middle. Is this due to oil or battery?

I know that if I could just figure out what part needs to be replaced, and how to get to the damn part, I could fix it, or call a friend and get help fixing it.

As it stands though, I don't know enough about cars to know how to determine what the problem actually is. I don't know if any of these problems could be affecting or causing any of the other problems or if they're all seperate, and I don't know which I should address first.

I need help....I will humbly accept any suggestions or ideas. Will an oil leak effect or cause over-heating?
The oil leak should have been easy to find normally, because you just put cardboard under the engine and seel where it drips.

But the over heating should never have happened.

You never drive a car with any over heating, at all.

    You fix it immediately.

It might have just been the hose tear and low coolant, but now it sounds like you let the engine get so hot it warped the head.

Once the head gasket does not seal any more, you can get oil in the radiator, and water in the oil.

    Both are horrible.

You need to take the head/s off, have them machined flat, and replace the head gaskets.

It will cost you about $800.

And ignore the oxygen sensor. That is just reacting to the fact the head gasket is blown and you are pumping out oil and water in the exhaust. Will an oil leak effect or cause over-heating?
Thanks for all the help and great advice everyone. I called a couple of mechanics for a really rough estimate for the head gasket, the worst was $2000. I'm told I could do it myself, but I thought the heads need to be sent out to make sure they're straight or flat or something?

seems like you've got a big L but what can you expect for a $1000 check your fan clutch that may be the reason that it is over heating most people over look those types of things as for the oil leak i've got the same problem i have no idea whats the name of the thing its coming from so can't help you right thereWill an oil leak effect or cause over-heating?
I think, (hope?)you have multiple problems, because I cannot think of one thing that would explain all this. Yes , oil does help cool the engine, so an oil leak would cause it to run warmer, but not like this. Some parts of this story sound like a blown head gasket. That would explain the overheating and the oil leak. A blown headgasket right behing the alternator could explain the hissing (steam) and a wet alternator could cause the battery light to come on.

The hard brakes sound like a large vaccuum that removes the power from the powerbrakes.

Cannot help you with the Oxygen Sensor(s) Are you sure there are several?

Good Luck, I would like to here about the root of this mysteryWill an oil leak effect or cause over-heating?

  • How expensive is it to fix a water pump on a 1997 for Contour?

I bought the car for $500 and am looking to spend the least amount of cash to keep it running. Recently, the temperature gage has been spiking and falling, and the last time I had my oil changed, the mechanic said that the water pump was leaking/failing. As of right now, after approx 15min of driving the car, I open the hood only to find that nearly all of the coolant has cooked itself down to some orange sludge.

So, I ask of you two things: Is this a problem with the water pump or something else? Second, how expensive would this repair be? If it's expensive, would it be more economically feasible to save the cash I would spend on fixing it and spend it on a new(er) car?How expensive is it to fix a water pump on a 1997 for Contour?
water pump don,t make sludge. sounds more like a head gasket.

1994 Chevrolet Suburban 195,000 miles. 2 days ago had new cap, rotor, control module, wires and plugs put in by my mechanic. Before this work the vehicle would only start intermittanly (thought control module was bad). It never stoped running after it started but after starting it up a couple of times it just stopped starting. It turns over fine. Mechanic said he checked fuel pump - with in specs. Usually starts after sitting but since tune up it did the same thing wouldnt start after a couple of times and now wont start. Today, pulled air cleaner off to look at injectors but no fuel coming out when vehicle is turning over. Gave tank a few whacks with hammer to see if I could jar fuel pump but nothing. Is probably fuel pump but could it be - coil? IAC Valve? fuel pump relay (how to check)? oil pump? pick up coil (what is this)? Any advice to taking out fuel tank to change fuel pump? Dont want to pay $500 of labor just to take out tank to replace $75 part. Thanks for any helpHow to tell fuel pump is broken - 1994 Chevy Suburban?
Like every one else said check to see if the pump works and the filter is not clogged. Turn on the key without cranking the engine. For about 1/2 second the fuel pump will run to pressurize the fuel system and you will here the quiet buzzing noise it makes in the area of the fuel tank. If you can hear the pump running pull the coil wire and crank the engine, if you dont get any spark then the problem is the ignition module. The module sends signal to the injectors and the coil because they have to fire in time with each other! So when one isnt working the other one usually doesnt either! How to tell fuel pump is broken - 1994 Chevy Suburban?
Bad fuel pressure regulator may be bleeding off pressure to the return line or crank/cam sensor is bad and computer won't fire the injectors because of no signal. Do you hear the fuel pump hum when you turn the key on? If not, could be a bad pump or relay...test for power coming from the relay to the pump....check for a bad ground as well. If the pump hums and you have good pressure, I'd say you have other issues like the sensors. Best to buy a shop manual like Chilton or Haynes for the procedure on pulling the tank if needed. How to tell fuel pump is broken - 1994 Chevy Suburban?
If you can find it, check the fuel filter. It might be clogged with dirt, which would certainly starve your engine of fuel. That would be a relatively cheap and easy fix.How to tell fuel pump is broken - 1994 Chevy Suburban?
You didn't mention checking fuel filter?

disconnect fuel line between tank /engine

before removing the tank, check for a clogged fuel line. Als, cneck to be sure that there is power going to the fuel pump.

How urgent is replacing my brake pads at 15%? I have a 2002 Subaru Forrester. Where do you recommend I go?

My local Subaru dealer, upon doing my oil change (I'm at 72,000 miles) recommends 1,500 worth of repair including replacing the brake pads (I believe it), the power steering pump and the starter. I want a second opinion. I'm in Seattle/Lynnwood. Money is tight but I do want to be safe. How urgent is replacing my brake pads at 15%? I have a 2002 Subaru Forrester. Where do you recommend I go?
If money is tight, this is what I would recommend. Front brake pad are fairly easy to replace. If your not comfortable doing something like this, maybe a friend or relative could help. New pads only cost around $40 and its a 30 min job. Or take it to a local garage that has a good reputation. The dealer is usually the most expensive. What did they say about the power steering pump, is it just leaking a little? Try some stop leak first if that's the case. In most cases the pump will make a lot of noise before it goes out. Have an independent garage check it out first.

The starter will not be a safety issue. If it goes out you won't be able to start you car. Also a good independent garage could put in a rebuilt starter and save you some money. How urgent is replacing my brake pads at 15%? I have a 2002 Subaru Forrester. Where do you recommend I go?
Well, here, lets put it in a really easy to understand situation.

You like stopping your vehicle. It keeps you safe and alive.

Currently, your stopping ability, the ability that stops you from dying, or killing others, is down to only 15%.

Now, given that, do you really want to just put off the repairs? Is it urgent? I would think, for any logical person, that there's no question about it. Go get it fixed.

Power steering? Same thing. If you enjoy the ability to turn your car with any sort of reliability, get it fixed. How urgent is replacing my brake pads at 15%? I have a 2002 Subaru Forrester. Where do you recommend I go?

I have gas in my oil and need help are my rings and bearings still good?

My question isnt how it got there. It went through the rings, the gas was poured in the carb to prime the fuel pump. my fuel pump is good, my carb is good. Also It flooded it because i have a highrise intake and big carb also have a cam etc, and used the old spark plugs to attempt to test the engine. To much gas, not enough spark, flooded it. The thing is, is that i never managed to start it although i turned it over a good bit, i was wanting to know how likely it is that my bearings and or rings are messed up? thats the question.... Im praying that new spark plugs and an oil/filter change fixes the problem, im also planning to buy a high performance distributor/coil/cap. Please .let me know what you think. Thanks alot. K.C.I have gas in my oil and need help are my rings and bearings still good?
diablo you need to do a compression test to see if the rings are all good. a tester should run around 25 dollars or so more for better quality type. then you have the motor cranked 5 vevelutions each cylinder , writing the numbers you get. the variation should be less than 15 lbs or so any that read drasticly different should be rechecked and then noted. much lower would be blown rings. ps you dont prime a fuel pump pouring fuel into an engine thats just priming the cylinders.

Don't go completely off my source because im just a garage mechanic with no schooling, but i wouldn't think the rings and bearings would go bad, the only thing i know of that causes that is substances such as metal shavings from old parts, ect. getting in between the bearings and scraping them up.I have gas in my oil and need help are my rings and bearings still good?
I would replace the rings to be safe, i doubt it hurt them but id rather be safe than sorry.I have gas in my oil and need help are my rings and bearings still good?
probably washed down the rings not a big problem you will have to crank it until compression comes up without feeding it anymore fuel crank it a few times to get oil back into the rings make sure you are up on number one on the compression stroke if you have spark it should fire and run bad for a while then get better set timing

Can the oil pump be the problem...?

when im driving,i push the accelerator in and it takes like 10 seconds for it to get to like 20 mph,and so on...has no acceleration basically, and it uses 20 50 oil...does the oil have anything to do with the car being like this?any advice and info would help and is it the oil pump?if so please explain to me how to change it thanks...Can the oil pump be the problem...?
When was the last time the air filter was checked? It sounds more like it may be starving for air than any thing to do with oil supply. If the air filter is OK, then I would check for exhaust system blockage problems, It may be a bad or plugged catalyst,,... or some exhaust pipes may have damaged. Can the oil pump be the problem...?
I agree with Del you have some sort of air/fuel delivery problem.

If it were the oil pump or an oil issue you would have all sorts of noises coming from you engine if it were oil starved. Can the oil pump be the problem...?
that sounds more like the cat converter then the oil pump. if the engine is,nt making any noise then the pump is working.

  • 1990 dodge ram oxygen sensor + fuel pump?

I am debating on changing my oxygen sensor in my 1990 dodge ram d150 5.2l. My engine stalls when I am idling in every position EXCEPT park. Park works great. It will not stall if I give it a steady stream of gas. My truck hates stop lights and stop signs.. haha...

Anyhow, how the heck do you change one? I've found it on the vehicle, and it looks like I'd have to drop parts of the exhaust system to do it. Any advice? I can't afford to take it to a shop. Should I bother with this?

Tomorrow I plan to check the :

    rotor

    distributor cap

    catalytic converter clogged

    compression check

    new spark plugs

    oxygen sensor

    oil change

I was also told it might be the fuel pump, but I doubt it. I can hear the fuel pump working well. My fuel pump is in the tank, how hard would it be to replace that? What steps would be involved?

I've checked/replaced - air and fuel filters, pcv valve, checked for vacuum leaks, checked for correct firing order.

What should I do next?1990 dodge ram oxygen sensor + fuel pump?
it sounds to me like a sensor my guess would be the idol air sensor they are well known for that in lots of cars1990 dodge ram oxygen sensor + fuel pump?
i would remove the idle air control motor first and make sure the passageways are clean, you may also want to clean the throttle plates.

If fuel pump were failing your truck would most likely idle OK but would have a severe lack of power when trying to accelerate.

Failing catalytic converter can cause lack of power but would not affect idle in certain gears.

Tune up components (and oxygen sensor) could cause it to run rough but usually do not cause vehicle to die at idle.

I have seen on Dodge trucks (and dodge trucks only) where a bad battery can cause it not to idle but still provides power to crank and start and vehicle will keep running when on gas but usually die at idle no matter what gear. Check your idle air control motor and passageways first

2004 Civic Burning Oil After Changing The Timing Belt...?

So, yeah. I brought the car into the dealer to change the timing belt [routine maintainance] and they changed out the water pump and put on new fan belts at the same time.

Afterward the car sounds a bit funny. The engine is louder and makes a sputtering noise in the lower RPMs, but seemed to perform fine, so whatever.

Fast foward a month or so and I found that the car was down a quart of oil. Just yesterday I noticed that the exhaust is smokey [not a whole lot, but enough that I could tell] and doesn't have the fruity smell that it's supposed to. Then today my engine light came on.

Anybody know WTF they screwed up and how much it's gonna cost me to get it fixed?2004 Civic Burning Oil After Changing The Timing Belt...?
There's really no parallel between a timing belt and water pump vs. oil consumption.

The %26quot;sounds a bit funny%26quot; doesn't really do much to describe a noise.

You'll need to have the fault code(s) retrieved from the PCM to determine just what set off the check engine light.2004 Civic Burning Oil After Changing The Timing Belt...?
if there was a bent valve ya'd know about it , if ya burnin oil and the exhuast is real smokey specially after start up it might be valve stem oil seals which wouldn't have been touched in a timing belt replacment or if its using water too ya could check the oil filler cap for a yellowey gunge if there is some ya head gasket is gone

i doubt it was anything to do with the belt being done though , if the belt was on wrong the car wouldn't run ... full stop2004 Civic Burning Oil After Changing The Timing Belt...?
Timing belt Replacement is a job that has nothing to do with the symptoms you just mention, If I would have to guess? they switched the engine .lol.2004 Civic Burning Oil After Changing The Timing Belt...?
Oh dude! When they put the new belt on they got it just a hair off so your camshaft isn't opening the valves in sync with the crank. This will leave a valve open with the piston at top dead center and has probably bent a valve stem, knocked a hole in the piston, scored up the cylinder wall, and generally screwed up the motor. I'd be back in to that dealership pronto for a new motor; the one you have is toast.

P.S. I'd sue them if they don't offer to fix it for free. It was their screw up that did the damage.

Whats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?

I know the basics, can change my own oil, changed a water pump, starter, battery, etc...but now I want to restore my 1972 ford F100 and I dont know really where to start. The truck runs good EXCEPT for the following: the carberator needs to be changed, valve cover gaskets and possibly some on the engine block need to be changed as they look like they are disinigrating and half rotted away. I might at some point want to change the engine completely putting in a 351 cleveland. I also might want to add to the rear end speed so it is faster in general ( I dont even know if I said that right) so forgive me if I sound totally green here. Basically I am approaching 40, getting divorced and need a hobby. I have always wanted to restore an old vehicle so I am going to dive into this completely, just dont know where to start. Any help would be very appriciated, thanks!Whats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?
You can start in learn how to tune the carb. ie set idle, idle fuel mixture, choke. Maybe learn to rebuild one. Check your local library for the automotive books.

Next learn the distributor and timing. Actually if you can get rid off the points/condenser and change to electronic that would be the best thing to do. Never to have to deal with it again. Save money too, bc no need to buy a dwell meter or timing light(well rarely needed).

Working on cars/truck is all about the tools. Don't have the right tools, can't work on it.Whats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?
Go down to a quality book store and grab some books and glance through them all and gain a little info at a time. Sounds boring. I thought it would be, but I actually enjoyed sitting down and learning about what I truly enjoy. Also, I'm 17, so if that doesn't say anything, then I don't know what will, hahaWhats the best way to learn how to work on vintage cars?
Start the way of thinking : vintage, modern car, it's all same how to work. The different is technology, more brain and mental is work then computer, fragile and or rare parts. The rest is same, to get trouble shooting is same, only part place and how to do it is the different. Unless you try to build vintage, meanwhile your days work is starfleet officer, it's all totally different. Start read book of Haynes or Chilton, read magazine, and article is a good start. Even better if you can make relation to mechanic or society.

How can I check my oil pressure?

I have a '95 F-150 w/ 5.0. My oil pressure gage reads low and occasionally jumps up and down. Is there any way I can check what the actual oil pressure is? I'd like to know if it is faulty gage or a bad pump, without having to take it to a mechanic. It uses a little oil between changes.

How can I check my oil pressure?
those models were know for having weak oil pumps that went bad, if it is jumping between average and high pressure let her ride, but if its reading real low like no oil pressure at all then max, better have her looked at.How can I check my oil pressure?
You can remove the oil pressure sending unit and screw in a test gauge. Most common for the sending unit to go bad. I would just replace the sending unit. Is the oil pressure gauge the only one that reads off? If they all read off you may have an electrical problem in the dash.

How serious is a broken water pump on a car?

I recently took my 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix in for an oil change, and was told that my water pump has burst. I knew something happened the previous night because all of a sudden my car was overheating and when I opened the hood there was water everywhere, Anyways I am currently a single mom, working temp jobs while I look for something permanent. I can not afford the 350.00 to get it fixed. If I continue to drive the car am I looking at serious damage, He showed me how to fill the water tank (or whatever) so that the car will not be empty, But he says I need to get it fixed soonHow serious is a broken water pump on a car?
A water-pump has a %26quot;weep-hole%26quot; on the bottom of the input shaft that purposely leaks coolant when the sealed bearings have been damaged. You must get it repaired ASAP because when you run out of coolant you'll over-heat @ permanently ruin the engine. Call as many local private mechanics and repair shops for a less expensive price to have a new re-manufactured water-pump installed.

*In the mean time call NAPA, Carquest, Advance Auto or Auto Zone and ask for a *closed system 4 pound radiator pressure cap and install it when the engine is stone cold. The reason for doing this is the cooling system will build 4 pounds of pressure instead of 16 pounds. It should leak less and slower with the 4 pound cap. You must refill the radiator when it's cold everyday and keep the plastic coolant recovery bottle 3/4 filled when it's cold eash day also.

Most likely someone has not used Dex-Cool antifreeze exclusively in the cooling system. Mixing brands with different formulations of antifreeze will cause a black/brown muddy mess in the cooling system, wipe out a water-pump early. How serious is a broken water pump on a car?

If the pump in not working or leaking or anything it is going to ruin your car very shortly. The pump circulates the coolant in your engine to keep it cool. Without it working properly your engine will overheat and something fatal will happen very quickly and you will be looking at buying a new car.How serious is a broken water pump on a car?
without your water pump working your engine has no way to circulate coolant, therefore overheating will result. if the temp gets too high cracked blocks and/or heads may develope which is far more serious. if you know a friend that has mechanical abilities have them get a used water pump from a salvage yard (approx. $20-$40) i would not run a vehicle with a water pump that does not work. How serious is a broken water pump on a car?
very serious. The water pump forces coolant through the engine, keeping it within operating temperature. When the temp gets too high, the car overheats. Get that water pump fixed asap, for it can cost you an engine, the problem only gets worse after a while. How serious is a broken water pump on a car?
I will try to put this simply.

It is very serious. Water cools your engine and without the pump to circulate it, your engine will overheat and very quickly damage itself. Even if you add water constantly, it is not being circulated, your engine will overheat and the new water you will put in will probably instantly boil and rush up into your face. My advice. Don't drive it until you can get it fixed. Sorry, I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but I am concerned for your safety and I don't want you to wreck your engine and you will if you keep driving it. The damage you can do is like this. The engine overheats and seizes up. This means that the engine parts, pistons and rings have expanded beyond design limits. They break inside and wreak havoc. The crankshaft and big end bearings can seize also. If all this happens, you are looking at a reconditioned engine. Fix your pump. It's cheaperHow serious is a broken water pump on a car?

A friend should be able to change it for you in an hour or so. ONLY GET A NEW ONE! It's a domestic car, the new water pump is going to be a few dollars more then a used or manufactured one, but it will last longer and you'll have a good warranty on it if you get if from an auto parts store and keep your receipt. Find someone at work or wherever and ask them if they'd do it for you. Good luck!

If it's the screen-wash reservoir that's leaking then it's not a major problem, it just means you wont be able to spray your windscreen with water if dirt gets on it.

If you mean the radiator coolant pump then yeah, that's really serious.

The radiator pumps the mixture of anti-freeze and water round the engine and draws heat out. It lowers friction and stops the engine from overheating to a point where it will die.

You will be OK temporarily with refilling the water frequently but you do really need to get it fixed ASAP because if you forget to refill it and drive a long distance, you may end up completely ruining the engine. Then you'll wish you spent the 350.00 on it, instead of having to pay a few thousand for a new car.

Plus, it's not exactly convenient having to top the radiator water up every day is it? :P

Replace the water pump on a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird LE?

I have a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird LE. It has 4 cyl. and it has 98,000+ miles on it. I took it in to get the oil changed and they inspected the car for a noise it was making. Found out the water pump was gone and the timing belt was worn. Need replacement on both. They quoted me 670.00 for the repair! STEEP! The part should cost about 20.00 max. How do I replace the water pump myself? And the timing belt? Do I need special tools? If I can't do it pretty easily myself, how much should I pay for the repair? I'm not made of money, but I need my car to run to get me to work everyday! I can't afford much, so anything around 200-300 is probably the most I can spend on the repair. What should I do?Replace the water pump on a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird LE?
On a 92 Pontiac Sunbird with a 2.0 engine, based on http://www.Napaonline.com, your timing belt with cost $15.99 and your water pump will cost $35.19 for a new one. Keep in mind that most shops charge more than that as this is how they make a profit. Depending on what their labor charge is, that doesn't sound too far out of line. I just did a timing belt and water pump on a Chrylser with a 3.5 today and it cost about $600 to do that.

The water pump on your car is driven by the timing belt and is not an easy task to accomplish if you have no idea what you are doing. You can easily destroy this engine. If you are not sure how to replace an air filter, this would definately be out of range.Replace the water pump on a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird LE?
The best thing you could do is maybe run to a library and they might have a Chiltons or Haynes repair manual you can make some copies of, check it out and decide for yourself, but a timing belt is a pretty involved process, not so much for a water pump.

Does my '04 Suzuki Verona need a engine flush?

And how much should it be? I've had my car just under a year and the oil pump has failed twice! I think I failed again but the place I took it says I just need a engine flush and oil change. I think they just don't want to replace the oil pump for the third time. What are your thoughts? Thanks :)Does my %26039;04 Suzuki Verona need a engine flush?
No car ever needs an engine flush. All that does is knock all the built up sludge and debris loose into other parts of the engine. A lot of oil changes with good, high detergent oil is the best way to clean an engine.

The only thing you might need to do if junk is killing the pump is to clean the pan out, but they must be doing that when they replace the pump unless they're complete idiots.Does my %26039;04 Suzuki Verona need a engine flush?
If an oil pump quits or fails it usually takes the engine with it.....I have never seen an engine that runs without knocking ater the oil pump quits. Some one is jerking you around real good......What does you oil pressure guage read when the pump does work??????.Does my %26039;04 Suzuki Verona need a engine flush?
sounds like you have internal engine problems

if you have changed even one oil pump something is very wrong

you should have replaced the block when the pump failed the first time.

Any1 know about engines? wat about a 92 2.3l mustang?

ok so i have a 2.3 l mustang and i bought it after it sat 4 awhile and so i changed the oil and a couple other things and it drove fine 4 like a month and then the oil pressure went to nothing and it started making a ticking noise (not a grinding noise) so i parked it and changed the oil pump and nothing changed so i have heard from alot of people that the problem is that 1 of the oil lines that go to the top of the engine is clogged and i put rizlon in when i changed the oil pump it was sappose 2 get rid of oil build up but it hasn't worked so does any1 know how 2 clean out the lines that bring the oil 2 the top of the engine?Any1 know about engines? wat about a 92 2.3l mustang?
Ok you changed the pump but what about the screen?

The gaskets are known for coming apart, clogging the screen and causing loss of oil pressure on those models.

and the only ways to clean the ports if they are blocked are to steam the motor... the flushes work sometimes, sometimes no..depends upon the damage...

Pull the valve cover first and see if their is a buildup of gunk there.. if yes, the passge ways are almost guaranteed clogged... if not, check that screen again... you may have to check the bottom of the pan also (plus make sure you put the pump drive correctly back in the distributor/ oil pump drive...Any1 know about engines? wat about a 92 2.3l mustang?
It probally sat and the oil turned to gunk and even though you changed the oil it already had some in the oil strainer tube in the oil pan. Your only real solution is to take the engine apart and start a rebuild, because it sucked that gunk up into the internals of the engine...

My dad had this happen last year with a F-150 5.0 that had sat for 4 months...Any1 know about engines? wat about a 92 2.3l mustang?

Does a problem with water pump bearings mean the water pump and timing belt needs to be replaced?

My '06 camry 4cylinder with 66K miles has been making a slight rumblings noise since Sunday. Leaving work today, I thought the car was going to die because the noise was very loud and persisted as I pressed on the gas. I had to go on the freeway and stayed to the right for fear that something would happen. It was weird but at some points on the freeway there was no noise at all and I could pick up speed to reach home. As I was getting an oil change yesterday, the technician stated that it sounds like a problem with my water pump bearings. The noise is coming from the area that has a belt spinning.

I don't want to get preyed on because I'm a woman with no obvious knowledge about cars. If its the water pump bearings will I need a new pump? Although its recommended to change the timing belt at the same time do I HAVE to? Any idea what the best case scenario (low cost) and worst case scenario for this is? How much time does one have to address this? A friend knows a mechanic 35 minutes away but im scared to drive that far and destroy the engine or something.I also have to get my transmission serviced and I'm seeing this car job costing 700+ due to the mention of timing belt. Any info about this would really be appreciate.Does a problem with water pump bearings mean the water pump and timing belt needs to be replaced?
Was it a loud high pitched noise or just a screeching noise? If it was a loud high pitched noise then it is your water pump and although it is not necessary to replace the timing belt because of the water pump, I would highly advise because:

    1. Yes, in most cases you have to take off the timing belt in order to get to the water pump and it would only cost a few dollars more.

    2. Your vehicle already has over 60K mi and if you look in your owner's manual it will state in the maintenance section to change the timing belt at this point.

However, given the mileage, I would think it a little unlikely that it is the water pump.

If the noise is just a screeching noise, get a can of Belt Dressing from and auto parts store and spray it on the inside of the serpentine belt (the belt that runs the alternator and other accessories) to see if that quiets the noise. You know what, on second thought, scratch that. I'm guessing it has never been replaced. Take your car to an auto parts store and have them look at the car, more specifically the serpentine belt. They can tell you what's wrong with the car. I'm guessing the serpentine belt or the power steering pump is low in fluid.Does a problem with water pump bearings mean the water pump and timing belt needs to be replaced?
uhhhhh i've never heard of changing a timing belt with changing a water pump so i'd say no to the timing belt. your timing belt keeps your engine valves, ignition synchronized it has nothing to do with the cooling system. best case do it yourself and prices all depend on the car. on my car which i did myself cost me around 35 dollars. worst case going to a toyota dealer and paying somewhere between 100-200 dollars for the part and maybe more for the labor. the timing belt is not the issue if the bearings are going out in a water pump UNLESS for some reason toyota decided to interconnect both things. but i doubt it. go to a different mechanic to get a diagnosis. Do not be pressured into buying anything.Does a problem with water pump bearings mean the water pump and timing belt needs to be replaced?
No you don't have to. But;If you don't you may be paying more as you will have to pay for the same work again later. Best case is to change the belt now and be able to drive worry-free. If you aren't leaking anti-freeze yet; you can drive it to repair shop. But I would stay as much to the side roads as I could.

  • I am winterizing my kawasaki jet ski?

how do I change the pump oil in my jet ski and does it have to have antifreeze installed for storageI am winterizing my kawasaki jet ski?
You really need to give more information with this question. Year make and model would help. It would especially be helpful if you explained whether it's a two cycle or four cycle engine. Here goes a try at an answer anyway. Here's a link to a forum down below on how to winterize a kawasaki 650 jet ski. To remove the oil, on a 4 cycle, you'll need a suction pump to suck out the old oil. The website suggests leaving out the spark plugs after fogging and putting a 50-50 antifreeze mix into the engine. I think it makes a lot more sense to raise the front of the ski and simply drain all the water out of the engine before storage, and to fog the carbuerator until the engine stalls, then remove the plugs, fog the cylinders and put the plugs back in for the winter. The suggestion about adding a fuel stabilizer makes a lot of sense too.

If you have the owner's manual, it will probably tell you exactly how to winterize your jet ski.

There was also another piece of information you failed to give with your question. Your location. Needless to say, if you live in the south or on the west coast you really won't need any antifreeze, and all you really want to do is to do a normal oil change and make sure the fuel in the tank is fresh.

    Good luck.

had the head gaskets changed and oil pump and code 13 shows up on scan tool. Code 13 is oxygen sensor low signal. The car runs like crap. How do I fix the problem does it have anything to do with the catalytic converter. It wants to kill when I step on the gas, spits and sputters and car shakes. Definitely could be the Cat, it will create excessive back pressure and blow the head gasket. Also make sure the timing is exact and that the firing order is 18436572.

I will be aquiring a 2001 Saab 9-5 SE with the 3.0 V6. How much will the Saab mechanic get me for?

The car has 94,000 on it now. The belt and water pump were never changed. The previous owner was meticulous on the cosmetics aspects and synthetic oil changes, but not mechanically. The car runs fine now but I know I need to get this changed.I will be aquiring a 2001 Saab 9-5 SE with the 3.0 V6. How much will the Saab mechanic get me for?
I have the same car with 176k miles on it. 2001 9-5 SE V6 sedan... I just had the timing belt AND tensioners (very important to do them too) done at my Saab mechanic for about $750. This also included the serpentine belt and tensioner. Enjoy they car, you'll love it!!

EDIT: Please do not listen to the two people who answered after me, specifically Bramst, because (with all-do respect to him) I assure you that he does not have any experience with the V6 engine in the 9-5's from 1999 to 2003. It is true that the 9-5 V6 is based off a terribly unreliable Opel engine used in 900's and 9000's, but the 9-5 V6 is VERY MUCH improved. The old engine required the timing belt to be replaced at 30k mile intervals, the newer one only requires 60k mile intervals. There are MANY, MANY happy 9-5 V6 owners with well over 100k miles on them, myself included with 176k as of yesterday. There are even a bunch I know of with over 200k. I definitely recommend visiting Saabnet.com, and checking out some of the posts about the 4-cyl vs. the V6 9-5. Many agree that the V6 is a more reliable alternative to the 4-cyl because the V6 is not prone to sludge, head gasket problems, head bolt problems, PCV issues, etc...

So Bramst, I recommend you do a little research before you go bashing a perfectly good thing.I will be aquiring a 2001 Saab 9-5 SE with the 3.0 V6. How much will the Saab mechanic get me for?
If you're going to buy a used Saab with the miles close to tipping 100,000 it is absolutely imperative that you make a list of Saab specific mechanics in your area and shop around on the price they charge on the water pump and belt. Do NOT EVER take a Saab to a mechanic that doesn't advertise Saab as one of their specialties but ideally you want to find a mechanic that works exclusively on Saabs.

You didn't list what area you're in, but if you want to follow up with a comment where you live I might be able to point you in the right direction .

It's important to find a mechanic that is honest, and one that will also let you find your own parts (which are ALWAYS cheaper if you order ahead on the internet. I have a guy that sends me parts for about 1/3 of the price any mechanic will change) instead of insisting that in order to work on your car that you pay their absurd prices for specific parts. (I've run into some crooks like that)

Anyway, in my experience, a replacement water pump (assuming the mechanic has a used one for sale, or you can find one for less than a new pump) will cost you parts and labor in the mid $200's, but if you need to buy it new will be be closer to $400. The belt I'm not sure of, but you can get an idea of the price of the belt itself by shopping for the part online. You should ask the buyer where he had his SE serviced, as I'm sure he has a good idea of who the most honest cost-effective individual is in your area is. (All Saab owners are fanatics) This will help you keep costs down and save you the trouble of researching the mechanics in your area although it would still be good practice to do so.

One last thing, ask him whether he buys his parts from a third party and where, be it online or a 3rd party parts dealer.

Oh, and almost forgot, the best forum that I've found amongst Saab owners to discuss whatever questions might arise is: http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/

Stay away from that V6! It was not a good engine. Wait and find a 4cyl turbo. The V6 is an Opal motor and the turbo 4 is a real SAAB motor...

The water pump and belt should be $400 - $600.I will be aquiring a 2001 Saab 9-5 SE with the 3.0 V6. How much will the Saab mechanic get me for?
Just get the belt replaced, the thermostat replaced, and have the radiator flushed. If the water pump shows no signs of leakage or noise, don't change it. If your car ever starts to over heat, shut off the car, and call a tow service. Driving your car hot will destroy the engine resulting in thousands in damage.

it sounds like you need to change your fuel filter or your fuel pump may be going out (sometimes they do repeatedly you can get bad ones from the shop (I once got 3 bad ones in 4 months)

It is usually on the fuel line from the gas tank, or it is on the fuel line entering the engine.

You usually need to change the oil filter every 3,000- 6,000 miles.1996 sl Saturn bogging down accelerating?
Ok, now I can help you here.

Most likely, just take ur car in and get a full service oil change (oil, oil filter, and air filter all replaced. If THAT doesn't work, try (if you arn't %26quot;mechanically apt%26quot;, I suggest trying a mechanic) adjusting the idle. I used to have a 96 SL1 and I ALWAYS had the %26quot;Service engine soon%26quot; light on. Also, you asked where the oil filter is. I assume you wish to change it yourself? If so, it can be reached on the underside of the engine (while the car is jacked up and on stands of course) slightly toward the passenger side wheel and toward the rear of the engine, if memory serves me correctly. Hope this helps!1996 sl Saturn bogging down accelerating?
The fuel filter should have been replaced when the fuel pump was replaced. Fuel filters will never clog unless it's the dead of Winter and there is moisture tht has frozen in the tank and the ice crystals clog the filter.

It sounds like you either have low fuel pressure, might have another bad fuel pump, or the catalytic convertor is almost plugged up. This happens especially in city driven cars with small engines.

The best way to check this is pull out the O2 (oxygen) sensor near the front of the engine exhaust manifold and then start the car and see if it runs OK when you rev the motor. If it does not bog down then you know it's the catalytic convertor.

Put the O2 sensor back in before you drive the car around so you don't start a fire under the hood.

    Good Luck!

Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?

Hello, I own a 2001 mazda protege and the temperature gauge has been acting up. I have recently changed the water pump and timing belt as well as changed the oil and added new coolant. But after driving for about five or ten minutes, the temperature gauge gets very hot. And recently, it reached the max and the coolant began to boil. I have been too afraid to drive it around. Any suggestions why this happens and how I should go about fixing this problem? Thanks.Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?
Check your thermostat. If it isn't working then your car will overheat. It doesn't sound like a fan because it is overheating too fast. Also when you fill the coolant up in the radiator it is best to do it while the vehicle is running. Leave the cap off and when the car warms up it will cycle the radiator fluid into the engine and give you a chance to fill the radiator up some more. A lot of times people do not do this and it leaves the engine empty of fluid and the radiator full making it harder for the car to cool down or even leaving air pockets that can cause overheating. Also if you pull the thermostat out and boil it in some water when the water starts to boil it should pop open if not then it needs to be replaced.Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?
Did you bleed the air out of the system when you refilled it ?Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?
Yea I have advise and that is replace the radiator and thermostat and stop putting tap water in the damn thing! Only use distilled water with the radiator fluid and don't buy the premix shitttt! Tap water has lime deposits in it and they collect around the radiator vents at the top and plug it up to where the fluid can't flow freely through it and it over heats and also it collects around the thermostat and it will stop working and quickly over heat the car and you have to replace it and the distilled water and radiator fluid that you put in will stop this from ever happening again! Once again! NO TAP WATER! Got me? Good luck with that! If you over heat it too much you will blow a head gasket and the oil and water will mix in the oil pan or the radiator or run into one of the cylinders and lock up the engine! Get it fixed!Temperature gauge in car always gets very hot after only driving about five minutes minimum. Any suggestions?
All being well as far as the cooling system is concerned. Then I will almost guarantee that the fan sensor is not allowing the fan to cool off the rad . Possibly the fan may also be stuck and the power not making it run. I really think it is fan related.

  • About how much would it cost to replace a water pump for a 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo LS including labor?

I've been noticing a difference in the temperature gage lately. The %26quot;change oil%26quot; light has also been coming on and I just had an oil change not even a month ago, and the car isn't even due back for at least another month. I noticed there's a green/blue liquid in my driveway today, too. I looked under the car and something is leaking or dripping around the passengers side front wheel. More so the passenger-middle side. I've been told it could be the water pump.About how much would it cost to replace a water pump for a 2001 Chevy Monte Carlo LS including labor?
Don't go blowing cash on a water pump just yet; It may be just a leaking radiator or heater hose. It would be wise to change the thermostat and check the condition of the coolant. (right here before summer)

Perhaps pressure test the cooling system...that will tell you right away if the impeller seal is bad in the water pump. Check the radiator hoses at that time... replace as necessary. if your (assumed) coolant leak is right around the passenger front wheel the pressure test could possibly reveal a freeze plug leak. (replacement required to fix that)

The labor will cost around $150 plus/minus $20.-and thats not even a good guess.

I tell you this: if you were in my circle of friends, I would do it for nothing: Thats what people do for each other. Anybody that knows you that has the tools and ability should do the same...

Try this: if you have your oil changed at a quick lube, ask the manager which one of his guys would be qualified for such a sidejob... any gearhead will jump at he chance to help a lady out %26amp; make sure the job is done right instead of some greasemonkey f*cking it up. It will cost you much less than standard labor rate and the extra coinage in his pocket doesn't hurt.

I'm not bagging repair shops, they deserve to make a living too, but every nickle counts nowdays...

Let him diagnose the problem(s), take him to Oreilleys to make sure you get the right parts, and buy him lunch.....

Enjoy your summer...an overheated car and related repairs will turn it sour in a hurry.

(edit) wow,... if you have the dexcool, then yes thats orange. If it's not a heater hose leaking your most likely right that the water pump is bad and loeaking coolant out of the weap hole, which is their so you know it's bad and needs replaced , i believe you should be able to have a new water pump %26amp; labor for around $300, bucks.Don't put it off to long or you might blow the head gasket. You don't wont to do take.

No Oil Presure 1999 Grand Am 3.4L OHV engine?

1999 Grand Am 3.4L OHV engine and I have no oil pressure and changed the pump but still no oil pressure and would like to see if the linkage to the cam is connected properly or perhaps broke. How would I go about this or could there be other problems. Any suggestions would be helpful. No Oil Presure 1999 Grand Am 3.4L OHV engine?
If the engine runs and there isn't any oil pressure you would be hearing a horrible noise and your engine would have some severe damage.

There is a linkage between the back of the cam and the oil pump that may have failed but it's not common.

If you want to check this you have to remove the upper manifold and pull the oil pump drive gear out of the top of the block directly below the throttle body. You will have to remove the single 15mm bolt and hold down clamp, then grasp it with a vise grip and give it a twist to wiggle it loose and then yank it directly upward to pull it out.

There's an o-ring on there that you can buy at an auto parts store for 79 cents. You want to replace that, they always dry out, crack, and leak like mad. If the gear on the end of that shaft you just pulled is ok, go ahead and check that hex shaft that you saw when you changed the pump. It should fit into the bottom of that shaft, and into the top of the oil pump.

You may want to check that gear on the cam that meshes with the gear on the shaft although typically the cam is made of a much harder metal than the gear you pulled out.

If you haven't found the problem by that point you may want to try turning the pump with a drill motor and a long allen/hex bit untill you figure out where your pressure is going.

If you can't get the hex shaft out, or you don't have a long hex bit, you usually can put a deep 3/8%26quot;x1/4%26quot; drive socket in there with an extension to prime the pump manually. If you turn it the right way with a drill motor you should feel signifigant resistance as the oil pressure builds.

Ps. Only 15% is filtered on my 51 Buick, but on modern engines it all is. It flows directly from the pump through the filter, and THEN goes throughout the engine. No Oil Presure 1999 Grand Am 3.4L OHV engine?

    Screeching Car noise... please identify!!?

I have a 1996 Isuzu Rodeo, and for about 3 years it hasn't been driven much. I've replaced the water pump, changed the battery, changed the oil, had the fuel tank treated and everything runs fine, but when I start it there is this God-awful screeching sound that comes out of the engine. I think it is a belt or a fan, but I don't know enough about cars to identify it.

When I took it in for an oil change, the guy wrote %26quot;belt noise prior to service%26quot;. It isn't just when it starts either, once I get going it goes in and out, depending on what gear I'm in and how fast I'm revving...

    Help!!Screeching Car noise... please identify!!?
Definately get a new belt, reset the tension properly, and spray a little belt dressing on there.

A quick suggestion, while you have the belt off, give the alternator a quick turn by hand. It should spin pretty easy. I've had the same problem with cars that have sat for awhile that the alternator will actually seize up. If the alternator doesn't spin really easy, this could be your problem. It's also a really good way to shread a perfectly good belt if the alternator is resisting too much. Just give it a quick check while you have the belt off anyway.

Good luck!!Screeching Car noise... please identify!!?
It's likely the belt. They need to be replaced periodically, usually every couple of years. Either that, or the belt tensioner has gone bad, but that's not too common if it's been sitting for a long time. Try a new belt, and see if the noise goes away.Screeching Car noise... please identify!!?
Could be the serpentine belt or possibly a fan belt if it's run off of a different belt. You can try spraying some belt dressing or WD40 on it to see if it quiets the noise. Any local autoparts store should carry either. You could try replacing the belt as well after visually checking it for signs of wear.

The service tech just wrote down %26quot;belt noise prior to service%26quot; so that it was known that they did not cause the noise while working on your vehicle.Screeching Car noise... please identify!!?
Most likely a belt. You should probably have all the belts changed since it was sitting for so long.

One other possibiltiy is the power steering pump. Make sure there is enough fluid in it. If there is not, it may cause a belt to slip.

What to do about oil in radiator?

i had my oil changed and full service at wal-mart. some how they put oil in my radiator reservoir instead of antifreeze.now my car is in the shop and all the hoses are busting due to the oil.my water pump will probably need to be replaced also.it's bad. How can i get wal-mart to own up to their mistake and pay to get my car fixed??What to do about oil in radiator?
sue sam and his kidsWhat to do about oil in radiator?
I hope Wal Mart idiots are the sum of your problem. Oil in the radiator is usually caused by a bad head gasket, which can also add pressure to the cooling system and cause hoses to burst. Take your car to a real mechanic, get your cylinders pressure tested to rule out head gasket. If your head gasket is bad, you owe Wal-Mart an apology. If it's not, they owe you whatever it costs to fix their mistake but good luck proving it.

Assuming somebody did make a mistake like that, you probably need to talk to the guys that actually worked on your car. Odds are good they don't work there anymore, if you can find them they'll probably be happy to talk. They'll be your key witnesses when you sue. Also, if you file suit against Wal Mart, your lawyer can subpoena their security tapes. Act quickly, before they tape back over them. Very likely you'll be able to see who did what to your car. What to do about oil in radiator?
not likely anyone would add oil to a radiator unless they did it on purpose but you would have to prove they did it and most likely that would be impossible so if you dont have a blown head gasket all one need to do is drain and flush radiator out wouldnt have anything to do with hoses busting or a bad water pump and water pump is not bad unless it leaks and most of time when you blow a hose its because it old or it just blows and most of time when one has oil in radiator its because you have a blown head gasket which is most likey why you blowing hoses not what they did at wal marts which is not really a ghood place to get anything done atWhat to do about oil in radiator?
You'll have to have two things to get any money from Wally Mart:

    1. Evidence that they did it.

    HI

First off oil in the radiator well not bust your hoses or the water pump. In fact there is a little bit of oil in antifreeze to lubricate the water pump. They don't allow antifreeze to be used on race tracks because of the slickness of antifreeze when it get spilled on the track.. Was you coolant just rusty or did it look like chocolate milk? if it looked like chocolate milk you may have a bad head gasket or intake gasket that's how oil gets into the cooling system. Also check you oil for coolant it would look the same like chocolate milk thats a sign of bad head gaskets.

    good luck

    Cleaning a rotary vacuum pump.?

Hey, my lab has a rotary vacuum pump as a foreline roughing pump in our Schlenk system, but careless running of the pump without a cold trap has badly contaminated the pump oil. I changed it out today and flushed 3 or 4 times with a small amount of clean oil as recommended, but when I filled the pump to the suggested level and ran it, I had a significant amount of oil vapour and a bit of particulate matter floating around.

What I'm wondering is if there's an easy way to clean out any significant gunk if need be, or if the darkening of the fluid and the vapour after refilling is normal. Also, I now have a litre and a half of dirty pump oil and I'm wondering if anyone knows how to filter and re-distill the stuff so that it can be reused. Its the standard Fisher Scientific mechanical pump oil, paraffin I think.

    Thanks!Cleaning a rotary vacuum pump.?
I've been in this situation before. Flushing w/ new oil is a good idea (and not a small amount, a full fill should be used - or at least enough to get to the lower level line / sight glass. Also let the pump run against atmospheric pressure, not vacuum. This will cause air to be pulled through the pump, heating it up and churning the oil, which will help loosen accumulated solids.) However, if you have a lot of accumulated solids, it may not remove all of them. I would recommend pulling off the pump housing and manually scraping out the gunk. This is fairly straight forward and doesn't require disassembly of the actual pump itself.

I've also had limited success w/ adding some water to the oil to dissolve salts. The problem w/ this is that you really need to be careful about removing all the water. Say you have a pump requiring 500mL pump oil. Add 100 mL water (and the oil too), run the pump for 5 minutes, then drain, add new oil and a water miscible organic solvent like IPA, run for a few minutes, then drain and fill w/ fresh oil. Run for several hrs under load to blow off any residual water / IPA.

Mineral oil based vacuum pump oil is pretty cheap. I wouldn't recommend trying to redistill and reuse.

  • 1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?

I received a car that had a broken cv axle. It had been sitting up for well over a year. I replaced the axle, bought a new battery, changed the oil, and put 2 gallons of gas in it (tank was dry, figured 2 gals. would be enough to start it). When I tried to start it I got nothing. So I poured a little gas into the throttle body to prime it and it started and ran for 8-10 sec. I then disconnected the fuel line and turned on the key to see if any gas was coming through, there was none. I checked the fuses and all were good. So I thought, it needs a new fuel pump, But after reading a lot of Dodge Man's answers (hoping to find one w/o posting a question), I found that it could also be the fuel filter or a relay. I'm not a mechanic but I did work at a salvage yard for 2 summers while in college and I can replace almost ANY part on a car if I know where it is. So, where is the fuel pump, the fuel filter, and the relay for the fuel pump? Oh, and how do I check fuel flow pressure when I'm done?1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?
Sorry, yes you do...The domestic car makers are still behind the times when it comes to creating an access hole for the fuel pump. %26quot;having worked in a salvage yard, you should have caught on to that%26quot;. Also, don't be surprised by the price. You may may want to verify that you still have a good 12 volt signal and a reliable ground to the pump unit; furthermore, have you checked the fuel pressure and volume? How about injector pulse. You also have not indicated if it is a 4 or 6 cylinder. Some times the cost of diagnostics by professonals can save you a lot of money. I have fixed a many car after customers have installed many hundreds of dollars just to get it towed to me.

If you have a professional fuel gauge, here are some spec's.

    8th digit on vin

    K...9-13 LBS

    M...38-38 LBS

    G...9-13 LBS

    A%26amp;D...41-47 LBS

    R...9-13 LBS

    VIN R WITH %26quot;W%26quot; BODY 26-32 LBS

    U...9-13 LBS

Now, for saftey sake, and without me having to key in injector resistance's and wire diagrams...seek professional help. NEVER attempt to drop or check fuel pressure on a high pressure system..if you have that model, yourself. You may get blinded, or worse....burned.

p.s. NEVER REPLACE A PUMP WITH OUT REPLACING A RELAY , FILTER AND PUCK UP SOCK!1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?
A manual would be the best help.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?
In my '92 Cavalier they had to remove the tank to get to the pump. My uncle did it. I honestly have no idea what I'm talking about. I just knew that it took them longer and cost me more money.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?
    Try to find a manual.

However I know that on the 1993 cavalier from the UK the fuel pump was actually inside the tank !

I think the fuel filter was up front near the throttle body...

This car was originally a german Open Ascona so may not be the same as other GM type cars.

Good luck.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?
Yes, you have to drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump, the fuel pump relay is located under the hood, on the fire wall to the right. When you turn the key to the %26quot;on%26quot; position, the fuel pump relay clicks on for about 2 seconds then shuts off. This is to pressurize the fuel system in anticipation of starting the engine. Have a buddy turn the key while you listen for the clicking relay.

The electrical connector to the fuel pump/sending unit, is accessible underneath the car near the fuel tank, usually behind it, the purple wire is the fuel pump power, i think, and will be energized for those 2 seconds after the key is turned on. The fuel filter is also underneath behind the fuel tank. If you replace the pump, deffinitely replace the filter too.1990 Chevy Cavalier: Do I have to drop the tank to reach the fuel pump or is it accessable from the back seat?
the tank has to be dropped for that. i payed 450 bucks to have mine done.
