Screeching Car noise... please identify!!?

I have a 1996 Isuzu Rodeo, and for about 3 years it hasn't been driven much. I've replaced the water pump, changed the battery, changed the oil, had the fuel tank treated and everything runs fine, but when I start it there is this God-awful screeching sound that comes out of the engine. I think it is a belt or a fan, but I don't know enough about cars to identify it.

When I took it in for an oil change, the guy wrote %26quot;belt noise prior to service%26quot;. It isn't just when it starts either, once I get going it goes in and out, depending on what gear I'm in and how fast I'm revving...

Definately get a new belt, reset the tension properly, and spray a little belt dressing on there.

A quick suggestion, while you have the belt off, give the alternator a quick turn by hand. It should spin pretty easy. I've had the same problem with cars that have sat for awhile that the alternator will actually seize up. If the alternator doesn't spin really easy, this could be your problem. It's also a really good way to shread a perfectly good belt if the alternator is resisting too much. Just give it a quick check while you have the belt off anyway.

Good luck!!Screeching Car noise... please identify!!?
It's likely the belt. They need to be replaced periodically, usually every couple of years. Either that, or the belt tensioner has gone bad, but that's not too common if it's been sitting for a long time. Try a new belt, and see if the noise goes away.Screeching Car noise... please identify!!?
Could be the serpentine belt or possibly a fan belt if it's run off of a different belt. You can try spraying some belt dressing or WD40 on it to see if it quiets the noise. Any local autoparts store should carry either. You could try replacing the belt as well after visually checking it for signs of wear.

The service tech just wrote down %26quot;belt noise prior to service%26quot; so that it was known that they did not cause the noise while working on your vehicle.Screeching Car noise... please identify!!?
Most likely a belt. You should probably have all the belts changed since it was sitting for so long.

One other possibiltiy is the power steering pump. Make sure there is enough fluid in it. If there is not, it may cause a belt to slip.
